Not sure I'd do that. Lithium batteries are rather nasty when they catch fire (i.e. from overheating).

Since Sony problems have been mentioned, for the last couple of years my T1 has had a problem where it will freeze up occasionally, normally when trying to look a word up in the dictionary, sometimes simply when trying to turn a page. It requires a pin in the reset hole to fix it. It didn't do it for the first couple of years I had it, only the last couple. It's annoying but not enough to make me spend $219 to get the Kobo H2O just yet.
I went from a T1 to an H2O and I am very happy I did. The H2O gives me a much better reading experience. The screen is better with better contrast, larger size, and higher resolution. The front light is much nicer than an external light. The firmware is better as I get more options on how I want to read books. The H2O is faster and does not slow down when I have high resolution images such as the cover. Page turns are faster. There is not one thing about the T1 that's better except (to some) the size and/or the weight. But other than that, the H2O wins hands down.

Now back when the T1 was new, it was good. But times have changed and the T1 is no longer as good. A lot of books cause the T1 to be slow opening some books because they have a cover that's high resolution. The T1 no longer works with Overdrive.

If you have to bypass the overheat protection, it's time to dump the T1 and get a new Reader. An exploding T1 is not a good thing to risk.

Kobo handles two formats* Kepub and ePub. Kepubs are a Kobo-specific format and they are the file types that display an oversized header and footer that requires a patch to remove.

EPubs only ever display a footer, though it is likely bigger than it needs to be. Kindle and (from what I remember) Nook handle the info much better.

*Yes, Kobo handles more than ePub and Kepub. I was just making a point.

I'm sure all that is true but the H2O also costs $219 which my already paid for T1 does not.

I'll be careful and charge it outside on the patio and if it is destroyed by fire it is no loss as it was unusable prior to the fix anyway.

But it can catch fire or explode while not being charged. Good luck to you. I would not be risking it at all. What if you were to be using it in an enclosed space such as a plane and it exploded?

I have no plans to travel for at least a year. If something is going to happen it will happen in that time.

Otherwise, there's that old saying "sh*t happens, then you die".
