As another data point, I've been running ADE 2.0.67532 for over 3 years without issue ... until the last few days, at which time I started getting E_Stream_Error errors when attempting to download an Overdrive epub using the associated acsm file

Based on this thread, I installed 2.0.1.78765. I can now download the epub that failed with 2.0.67532

Many thanks to the forum members for identifying the solution!

I came from the other direction. I had been using 1.7 on Linux Mint 17.3 KDE via WINE until last week. 2.0.1 solves the problem except I cannot install it and get it to work on WINE. I had to install it on Windows 7 and then use it. I suppose I can look at VMWARE or Virtual Box, but I will have to scrounge up a copy of Windows 7.
I love it when vendors make life so easy for end users.

The OS association with .acsm is 1.7.2 and the browser association is 2.0.1.

Do not blame Overdrive or Adobe for this one. It's not their fault ADE 2.0.1 does not run under Wine. Wine is an incomplete solution that's obviously not a solution (in this case). As I've said for a long time, dealing with eBooks is best done with Windows.

It's also perfectly straightforward with OS X.

ADE 2.0 takes for-freaking-ever to load on my computer, compared to 1.7. I'm hating that even more than the new interface.

Yeah, it does on mine too. It's been my biggest gripe about it since I switched a few years ago.

The reason ADE slows down is because of the number of books in the Digital Editions directory. For example, all the expired Overdrive eBooks are still there. The way to make ADE faster is to copy everything out of the ADE directory and let it start over. Even 1.7.2 slows down.

That's not exactly all the truth. Yes, if you don't remove expired books, all the ADE releases slow down. But, with the same number of books in both of them, ADE 1.7 is faster starting than ADE 2.01.

OK, Jon, thanks.

There's still a comparative difference between the two; 1.7 with the same directory was noticeably zippier compared to 2.0 I can't help thinking the fancier less functional appearance is at least partly responsible. However, live with it I must, so I'll do a major purge if that'll help to speed it up.

Yes, it does help to empty the directory. It becomes fast when you do that and you just do it again when it slows down too much.

That's weird. I've been using ADE 2.0.1 under WINE for a couple of years now. (On FreeBSD, no less.) Wonder what the issue is? Did you follow the directions at the appdb closely?

Same here. I didn't realize I had 2.0.6 until a library download failed. Fortunately everything worked after reverting to 2.0.1 which I was still able to obtain from Adobe.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I just today am having a problem downloading a Library book using ADE. It's not working saying there is ..

"The Rain in Portugal:
IO Error on Network Request.
Please check your network connection and try again."

I have (I believe) an older version of ADE (I've had it for ages 1..7.2.1131)
did anything change.. like this week? I downloaded an epub book last week (or so) definitely within the month.

I tried downloading from a different library and got the same error on a different book.

Any ideas/thoughts/information/direction?

Do I need to install the latest ADE (4.5 installer) or will that break everything!

may be a better forum/thread to ask....I did a search but only found this one...
