I just downloaded a library book directly on my Aura One. It seems to be working correctly. Since Kobo's parent company Rakuten owns Overdrive now one would hope that would be the case.

EDIT: I wasn't thinking about how Overdrive works with the Aura One. As Davidfor pointed out below, what I said here isn't quite right for the KA1.
This part was incorrect >> Having said that, Kobo is also using a newer version of the Adobe epub rendering software. I assume there is a tie in with it and the DRM part so even without the Rakuten connection it might still have been OK.

That means you have to be removing the DRM from the library eBooks. That's a no-no. What you should be doing is installing an app on the Kindle Fire to be able to read the ePub as is with the DRM. I know Bluefire Reader will handle the DRM. I'm not up on Android apps so you'd have to look for whatever apps will do.

Thanks.

For what it's worth, I've sent an emailed help request to my library, to see what they say.

If it has to do with the version of Adobe, then why am I still able to download and transfer books via the Sony Reader for PC software? I have not had any trouble getting books this way or opening them on the reader once they've been transferred. Maybe this is a stupid question - I am not the most technologically oriented person

The DRM part was strictly speculation on my part since that seemed to be the general thought in this thread as to why people might be having issues.
This is also speculation but my guess would be that it's possible that Sony Reader for PC has newer DRM components than the firmware in the reader itself, so it can decode it and allow the reader to read it once it is transferred onto it (the reader itself wouldn't be required to decode the DRM since PC already had).

You have had other answers, but, the way the Aura ONE handles books borrowed from Overdrive completely different to the way the the Sony's did or ADE does. Adobe DRM is not involved and the connection is between the Overdrive and Kobo servers not directly to the device.

At least you have some speculation that sounds good - I couldn't even come up with that!

Thanks - I had no idea how the Kobo thing worked.

I emailed my library's help desk to ask about this issue. Who knows if I will get a knowledgeable person with a useful answer, but I figured it was worth a try. If they report back that Overdrive is officially no longer going to support direct access for Sony readers, then at least I'll know for sure and I can decide whether I want to just keep the Sony and get my library books via PC (I do that most of the time anyway) or whether being able to occasionally get books directly on the reader is important enough for me to switch readers.

davidfor is correct. I wasn't fully thinking through the Aura One in my reply above.

Is anyone having intermittent problems with ADE 2.01....? I've used it with Google Books before, with no problems other than using it would always reset my ACSM associations to 2.0 when I was still mostly using 1.72.

With the latest switch on Overdrive, it seems like it fails as often as it works. Then I have to try to download it again...no, try again, okay that time it works. I'm afraid I'm going to hit a download-attempt limit. And since I'm almost exclusively downloading books in the hours between 11PM and 4AM, I know I wouldn't be able to get any help until at least the next day, assuming it's a business day.

Oh, and today when I tried to download an audiobook, it told me I had to upgrade my Overdrive Media Console too. #@#*^*!#

When I've had trouble downloading from Overdrive due to something either on their end or Adobe's end, I'd saved the ACSM file so I would not have to keep redownloading it and hit some limit (if there is a limit). The problem you might b encountering is maintenance. When site maintenance is done, it's done in the early hours of the morning.

To fix your ACSM association is to open an ACSM file with 1.7.2 andwhen you do that, select that you want this done always. But to be honest, I see no need to keep 1.7.2. 2.0.1 works where 1.7.2 doesn't.

Fully agreed now. It was more of a problem for me when it was only Google, but now that Overdrive has switched over, I'm fine with the association opening 2.01.

Interestingly, although it automatically opens at 2.01 now when I launch from the library website, when I try doubleclicking on the saved ACSM file, it still opens 1.72. I tried reassigning the association via Properties, and it keeps opening 1.72. Not a huge issue, but I will eventually want to fix that.

Slightly off the main Overdrive topic, but still dealing with frustrations it caused.

I would like to thank everyone here. Because of you I have a workaround.

I received notice a Library book, via Overdrive, was ready for me. On the Windows PC, I did my usual click on download epub just like I did last week. Only this time I went into a panic when I got an error from my Sony Library program (-144). Next up was to download the acsm file and right click to open in ADE. Like some others I got the IO Error on Network Request. Error #2038.

Went through the Overdrive troubleshooting steps to no avail. (I equate turning off the firewall with opening the car windows during a rainstorm, hoping I don't get wet). As a test, I borrowed a book in Kindle format. It worked just fine, —except— I'd have to read it on the computer just like the Read Now in the browser which has issues with Overdrive. Not a popular option with others who use the computer.

So, I came here and stumbled upon this thread.

Thanks to Purple Lady posting the link to Digital Editions 2.0.1. and others who were brave testers, I was able to open up my downloaded acsm file. I still have issues to deal with on my end, but thank you for a workable solution.
