It does appear to be true. I've just done a frequency search in the "Perseus" Latin archives at "perseus.tufts.edu" (probably the most complete collection of classical texts on the internet), and "virgo" is used almost three times as frequently as "puella".

Interesting. I'm going to have to crack out the OLD when I get home.

I'm kind of tempted to type up my translation of "Cena Trimalchionis" and post it on MR. But it is an incomplete translation of an incomplete work. It is hilarious though.

I agree - it's wonderful . The classic description of someone with huge wealth but no "taste" trying to "make an impression".

Have you read it? There's a free translation on the web somewhere, but it's Victorian in age. Needless to say a lot is lost.

Yes, I've read the Latin original. It's hilarious. There's a version adapted for schools available called "The Millionaire's Dinner Party" which is re-written in much simpler Latin, but half the fun of the original is the fact that Tremalchio keeps using the wrong words and making a hash of his grammar in an attempt to sound "posh".

It indeed was used very frequently, e.g. in Ovid´s Metamorphoses:

atque ait: o comitum virgo, pars una mearum,
in quibus es veneta iugis?" de caespite virgo
se lavat et "salve numen, me iudice" dixit,
"audiat ipse licet, maius Iove." ridet et audit
et sibi praeferri se gaudet et oscula iungit.
ec moderata satis nec sic a virgine danda.

In this context (roughly: boy kissing girl) virgo is used as virgin (at least I remember we translated "virgin" at school. But only in that case, usually we translated "young woman")

For schools? I hope they edit it a little (although I guess the dinner party isn't as bad, but some of the earlier parts of the book are)

I think I remember seeing it in Suetonius, but we also translated it as virgin, since that was what the passage was implying. I won't repeat it, it made me sad

Yes, it's just the dinner party bit, and they "tone it down" a lot.

I hate it when you educated types start using the lounge for intelligent discourse on topics about which I know close to nothing. Not that I don't know some Latin, but not as much as you (apparently).

However, I do know my Spanish, and "chiquita" does not mean girl or banana (except as a brand, of course). It means "little one" or "tiny." So

Further, now that you mention it, I can absolutely see the old lady riding the pig. That's kinda neat.

I like being from a country that is someone's weird uncle. It so totally works for me.

Latin can be fun: I'm sure you've heard of the emperor "Caligula" - he was the one famous for being mad as a hatter. Did you know that "Caligula" was just a nickname, and means "little boots"? It was a name the army gave him when he was a very small boy and used to accompany his father on military campaigns dressed up in a miniature soldier's uniform. Isn't that a fun thing to know?

Got that one from "Extreme Latin." Helped me learn my participles

Strictly it means "It is required of you to go fark yourself," but you can just say "you should go fark yourself."
