Fatherland or Motherland. And one Weird-uncle-land
In a recent post, I made a reference to the way Latin languages have genders for about every noun. Naturally I went on to provoke several countries (as one does in the interest of interest) by calling them girls. I think this provocation should go further, because I believe that public derogative remarks are the best and finest kind of humor. Therefore, here is a little list, based on the Portuguese language (but should apply to other Latin languages) of the countries represented in the poll.
United States - lots of male (plural) with a hint of San Francisco (America is female) Canada - male (despite having a "queen" for head of state) Mexico - male (we all saw that one coming, specially with the mustache deal going on) I'm not of this earth - male (but perhaps that species goes through gender stages) Luxembourg - male (however, if the size of the country is indicative of anything...) All the others - female (well, I'll get to you ladies later on, after I establish that I am actually kidding about all this, and that despite all appearences I am not a prejudiced guy) ![]() For now, I'll just end this post by going back to the USA, which after consultation of a Florida map appears to be clearly male. But then again, cosmetic surgery has come a long way in the last decades. Well, I guess Uncle Sam will remain our weird uncle for a while longer. |

Great Britain is an old woman in a fancy hat, riding on the back of a pig.

Latin had rules for naming places. Cities and countries were feminine. I forget the rest.

Just look at the map.
![]() The ground is at the bottom - from Cornwall in the west across to Kent in the east. The pig is facing west - Wales is the head, and East Anglia is its rump. The old lady sits on the pig, also facing west - very wrinkled face , with a hat on top. Obvious, I thought! Last edited by pdurrant; 02-03-2009 at 11:46 AM. Reason: Shouldn't deep-link - whoops. |

I would suggest that DixieGal = Dixia Puella. (DiXia Gallica isn't accurate because she's from Alabama, not Gaul).
