It's certainly not unprecedented: neither Dorris Lessing nor Harold Pinter showed up, either. There is, however, a commitment to give a Nobel Lecture within 6 months of the award date: that's the one requirement imposed on an award winner.

He'll probably be on tour in Australia or East Asia at the time.

EDIT: Or not. Forgot that it's in under four weeks. Tour dates should have been announced for that already. So he must have a deadline for his next garden gate or something.

Maybe his prior commitment is concerts that he is committed to performing for his fans. Not only would the promoters have to refund ticket purchases, but there can be penalties for canceling a concert.

If it is a performance that his fans are paying hard earned money to see than I would much rather see him do that show than show up at some awards banquet.

The fans got him where he is today. Not some award.

Note: The Nobel Prize Committee is not out any of their own money.
