Did anybody found any book where pinch zoom and that ultra fast page changing is working? Because normal page changing speed and panel view speed vastly increased on my Voyage but that two features are missing both in manga from store and sideloaded one (Well pinch zoom is here but it is old, ugly one). EDIT: Mystery solved - They are available only in KFX format. Last edited by AcidWeb; 10-19-2016 at 04:21 AM. |

I tried out the new manga features on the free Shonen Jump Manga Starter Pack. I can see why they released a manga kindle model with more storage. This sampler used over 100MB of storage on my Paperwhite 2.
The fast page change using press and hold works pretty well, much faster than I expected. (It's odd that multi-thumbnail page flip isn't also supported for manga. It would be useful for finding your place in a book with visual pages like those.) I found the pinch zoom to be OK, but not great. (I would prefer a panel-by-panel mode, but perhaps the visual layout doesn't lend itself to that.) |

100MB is average size of single volume. And some titles have dozens of them.
Yeah pinch zoom is still slow but still much faster than old one. It is really bad you can't use that two new features in sideloaded content. |

I did the upgrade but lost jailbreak to a mistake I made. I went back to original firmware. And back to my jailbreak/screensaver. In the meantime, I had the chance on testing the new firmware and I didn't notice anything new worth the upgrade. Am I missing something other than new homescreen? I guess only better battery performance would make me upgrade my ebook. What do you think? Last edited by Ret; 10-19-2016 at 10:33 AM. |

Just updated.
It seems the device responds faster, isn't it? Last edited by 344a; 10-19-2016 at 10:20 AM. |

They blew it!
I'd like to go in detail because I think that Amazon is going the wrong path with their GUI blow up! This update caused some real GUI pain for me! 1) The Password Dialog has changed to a bigger box. To say it differently they add a bigger padding to the right side of the box (filled with nothing). The top of the box has e.g. 5 pixel padding, the left side has 5 pixel padding, the bottom has 5 pixel padding *but* the right side now has padding of e.g. 20 pixel. Why ? This makes absolutely no sense. The only explaination I have for this is that someone by mistake changed some value in the wrong file and left it that way rather than undoing it. 2) The total mess starts now. Ok the new Settings area looks nice now but the elements inside it are just out of aesthetics. Why ? Some smaller popup window have an "X" symbol to close the window. Some smaller popup window have either "OK" or "CANCEL" (or something similar phrased aequivalents) for closing the window. Some smaller popup window have nothing of that. You need to fingertip outside of that window to close it. Could you at Amazon please decide and agree on a unified way of handling this ? Going back to that small "X" button (to close windows). Some are totally misaligned in the dialogs. E.g. the Search field (the lense glass) for example has the closing "X" outside the dialog. The password dialog has the "X" totally misaligned to the Title of the window. Same applies to other areas where the "X" has been put within the dialog. Borders around pressable buttons got removed entirely. Rather than having (Accept) (Cancel) You now see ACCEPT CANCEL within the window. Hard to distinguish whether you should (or could at all) press them or not. And why did you (Amazon) capitalize these letters ? Also they capitalized everything else within the new Settings area! The name of my Kindle was "Kindle" (yes not really creative). It was also shown as "Kindle" within the Settings area. Now they capitalized it and named it "KINDLE". Going inside the area to change this again shows "Kindle" in the textbox but in the label of the settings area it's "KINDLE" again. Why ? 3) I just downloaded the updated Kindle Manual (Release 6). I then notized some tiny symbols showing up at the bottom of said book. Sorry but I wasn't able to read anything!... So again! Download again! It said something like "downloading" .... rushing letters.... and then "complete" or something... also rusihing letters.... Damn! Make it even smaller! 4) Had various crashes when I opened a bunch of Amazon downloaded books (going to the cover (swiping from right to left)). In the middle of the swipe process the entire swipe hung and voila... Reset! These are the things that just sets me up! Amazon seem to get trapped the same trap that e.g. some open source developers on Linux (e.g. GNOME) developers trap themselves. Developers claiming to know what "usability" is. Starting to "clean" things up where there is nothing to clean! It's hard these days having developers or programmers made aware what GUI aesthetics are. To properly place an "X" button, to close windows. Or not to use different attempts of closing windows. E.g. some with the "X" others with "OK" and "ABORT". Or have most borders around pressable buttons removed, while other dialogs still have them (even with shadow). This is getting messy. Thanks for listening! |

I've done this various times in the past. Sadly the german Amazon Kindle Callcenter people usually respond that way:
"Dear Amazon Kindle customer, we are ... blah blah ... to help solve your issues please follow these steps ... blah ... Reset your device ... blah" They are not interested in any kind of "feedback". Maybe I am missing some sort of bugtracker ? Like Bugzilla or Mantis ? Once you've done this a few times with same answers from Amazon, you stop reporting anything to them. My hopes are, that a bunch of Amazon developers eye within this forum here. |

Presumably, things are capitalized to make them easier to read at small text sizes. A common complaint has been that the system text was difficult to read for some people. One can argue about whether that goal has been achieved, or why they couldn't have a setting to enlarge the system font.
While the x's may appear smaller, the tap zone is the same size. And in most (if not all) cases where x is shown, you can tap anywhere outside dialog to close it, no need to tap the x. The manga fast page turn seems to work well. You can also turn on 'virtual panel' mode, and it will pan around the panel (UR-UL-LR-LL) as you use page turn gestures. Would be nice if they had 'enhanced' page flip for them (multiple thumbnails at a time). |

The capitalization was never questioned. At least not by me. The capitalization of dialog buttons isn't necessary because the dialog buttons already had "bigger" and "bolder" fonts. But even so, this can still be accepted. Quote:
In case I explained myself not good enough (I am german). Let me try a different attempt of explaining it. Right now the Kinde firmware (as of 5.8.5) has plenty of inconsistent windows and this is most likely an issue of lack of quality control and/or wrong people working at wrong parts of that firmware. Right now we have windows (remember: dialogs) with buttons applied at the bottom that allows you to confirm or close the window. We have windows with said "X"'es at the top right (and badly laid out too) that allows you to close these windows. We have windows without "X"'es and/or confirmation buttons at the button, where you need to tab outside to close them. These are by now 3 different visual appearances and 3 different ways of closing the window. Example1: Click on the Lens at the top (search). Look at the window there. The "X" is outside of said window. In former Kindle firmware versions, this window looked similar to other windows having the "X" inside a framed window. Example2: Go to Settings->Device Name->(Arrow to change the name) You get a window with two *frameless* buttons at the bottom (besides the textfield to change the name of your device). One says "ABORT" the other says "SAVE" (Capital letters: or similar wording: I have my Kindle running in german language). Now go to Settings->Social Networks->Facebook/Twitter You get a window with two *framed* buttons at the bottom. The buttons are *first char capitalized* saying "Abort" and "Continue" (aha? not capitalized?). This is inconsistent, compared to the other windows. Example3: Go to Settings->Device options->Device info. A window pops up showing an "X" at the top right and a *frameless* button on the bottom right saying "NEWS". Now looking at Exampe 2 again. There was no "X" at the top right, instead there was an "ABORT" button at the bottom left. Making two similar window look "inconsistent". If you look around in the settings, then you may get more of these inconsistencies. Example4: Erasing WIFI-Passwords window. It has two frameless buttons at the bottom. One says "ABORT" the other "ERASE". Here you can not tab outside the window to close it. They are playing with "windows" (the type of objects that catches the entire kindle screen with e.g. buttons at the bottom). They deal with "modal" dialogs (the ones that doesn't allow tabing outside to close the window), they are dealing with other types of dialogs having an "X" inside etc. Even different wording for same "effects". I find this highly distracting. |

I guess I don't pay attention too much to dialogue boxes on my kindles. I find them to look a bit cleaner now with the new update. I can't say I ever looked in the setting for my device name once I named it. All my kindles have names.
![]() I have a nice X on my search box. I can't find anything wrong with my X ![]() It things bug you, send an email to the feedback email at amazon. My Oasis and Voyage are running very snappy now. But to be fair, they always tend to be a tad snappier after a update. Probably cleans out some slow juice. ![]() I really like the darker text in home view. I like the new setting look. But I didn't really have any issues with how that was before. I don't read Manga, not really sure what that is, I assume they are comic books? So I won't notice anything on that front as I don't read comic books. |
