£2.99 -- English and Their History -- Robert Tombs/ S Thorne --> 45.5 hrs/ R-4.6 --> history

Quote:
The English and Their History

Whispersync: Audible (£2.99) | Kindle (£9.99)

In The English and Their History, the first full-length account to appear in one volume for many decades, Robert Tombs gives us the history of the English people and of how the stories they have told about themselves have shaped them, from the prehistoric 'dreamtime' through to the present day.

If a nation is a group of people with a sense of kinship, a political identity and representative institutions, then the English have a claim to be the oldest nation in the world. They first came into existence as an idea, before they had a common ruler and before the country they lived in even had a name. They have lasted as a recognisable entity ever since, and their defining national institutions can be traced back to the earliest years of their history. The English have come a long way from those precarious days of invasion and conquest, with many spectacular changes of fortune.

Their political, economic and cultural contacts have left traces for good and ill across the world. This book describes their history and its meanings from their beginnings in the monasteries of Northumbria and the wetlands of Wessex to the cosmopolitan energy of today's England.

Robert Tombs draws out important threads running through the story, including participatory government, language, law, religion, the land and the sea, and the ever-changing relations with other peoples. Not the least of these connections are the ways the English have understood their own history, have argued about it, forgotten it, and yet been shaped by it. These diverse and sometimes conflicting understandings are an inherent part of their identity.

Rather to their surprise, as ties within the United Kingdom loosen, the English are suddenly beginning a new period in their long history. Especially at times of change, history can help us to think about the sort of people we are and wish to be.

This audiobook, the first single-volume work on this scale for more than half a century, and which incorporates a wealth of recent scholarship, presents a challenging modern account of this immense and continuing story, bringing out the strength and resilience of English government, the deep patterns of division, yet also the persistent capacity to come together in the face of danger.

no limit. you can have 10 at a time out to read. If you have kindle unlimited and prime, the books show up under KU on the borrows page (and you also don't get the old one free borrow from Prime, because what would be the point?)

The point would be that you used to have access to more than 1,000 books! Do you know for sure that the KLL has gone away with this new system? It might still exist but counts toward one of your 10.

Thanks. I had KU only for the initial free trial, but not anymore. What's piqued my interest is getting the Prime Reading Kindle book so I can buy the corresponding Audible Whispersync title; the ones I checked were $1.99 for the audiobook. So basically my question is, if I get the Kindle book through Prime Reading, how long will I see the Whispersync price at Audible?

I think you're saying that up to ten books would just sit in my library, until I chose an eleventh book, and then the earliest book would be dropped? So I wouldn't be under any time constraints to get the Audible book until I went over ten?

You'll see the Whispersync pricing as long as you have the book checked out. Once you return the book, the Whispersync pricing will disappear.

You can have up to 10 books checked out at any one time. If want an 11th book, you must return one of the 10 you have checked out. It won't automatically drop the oldest one. You need to return one.

There doesn't appear to be any time limit for how long you can have a book checked out.

$3.95 -- An Expert in Murder -- Nicola Upson/ Davina Porter --> 11.2 hrs/ R-3.9 --> mystery

Quote:
An Expert in Murder --> Josephine Tey Series (book 1 of 6)

Whispersync: Audible ($2.99) | Kindle ($9.99)

March 1934. Revered mystery writer Josephine Tey is traveling from Scotland to London for the final week of her play Richard of Bordeaux, the surprise hit of the season, with pacifist themes that resonate in a world still haunted by war. But joy turns to horror when her arrival coincides with the murder of a young woman she had befriended on the train ride - and Tey is plunged into a mystery as puzzling as any in her own works. Detective Inspector Archie Penrose is convinced that the killing is connected to the play, and that Tey herself is in danger of becoming a victim of her own success. In the aftermath of a second murder, the writer and the policeman must join together to stop a ruthless killer who will apparently stop at nothing.

Thanks. This is good; I can borrow the Prime Reading books, add the corresponding Whispersync titles to my Audible wish list, and let them sit there without any pressure to buy them right away to get the reduced price.

I had KLL, when I added Kindle Unlimited, there was no way to access KLL for that one borrow a month. Instead, I get 10 at a time, unlimited number for unlimited time borrow.

They added Kindle Prime Reading. I can see it, qualify, but cannot get borrows to go there, as KU supercedes it, just as it did the one borrow.

Since that one borrow/month was for Prime and now you get Prime Reading (which seems to be limited to 10 at a time, unlimited time and number/month, just as KU, but with the smaller KLL selections), it seems that the new deal is better than the old, for those who don't have KU.

Oh, and like with KU, make sure the book isn't free "to read and listen" or you can't buy the corresponding audiobook at a discount without actually purchasing the Kindle edition (instead, you can listen for free, while that book is borrowed).

When you choose #11, you are prompted to return #1, but can choose any other to return. And until returned, yes, they just sit there, month after month (I kept one book for several months; others I've returned in a week or less).

A-ha! The death of KLL has been exaggerated! I just looked for "The Hunger Games," a title I had borrowed from KLL in Prime Lending - not there. I then went to my Kindle, found the title, and the "Borrow For Free" button is still there. I almost thought that I was losing a benefit there.

They have mode them harder to find these titles, however. In the past you could go to Amazon and search for books with the "Prime" check box engaged to find KLL titles; that doesn't work any more.
