$3.95 -- The Alchemist -- Paulo Coelho/ Jeremy Irons --> 4.0 hrs/ R-4.5 --> contemp

Quote:
The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream

Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($11.99)

Most of us would be happy to listen to Jeremy Irons silken voice read us anything—the label on his sweater, an old grocery list—but to hear him tell one of the world's most enchanting stories is to be completely hypnotized by his incredible talents. This is the audiobook of a lifetime.

Paulo Coelho's rapturous novel has inspired a devoted following around the world. This story, dazzling in its simplicity and wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an Alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way. But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods, turns into a meditation on the treasures found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is art eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts.

Hear Jeremy Irons tell Paulo Coelho's legendary story, and be inspired to listen to your own heart, too.

$3.99 -- Warriors of the Storm -- Bernard Cornwell/ Matt Bates --> 12.2 hrs/ R-4.7 --> historical

Quote:
Warriors of the Storm --> Saxon Tales Series (book 9 of 10)

Whispersync: Audible ($12.99) | Kindle ($14.99)

The ninth installment in the New York Times bestselling Saxon Tales, the epic saga of the making of England, magnificently brought to life by "the reigning king of historical fiction" (USA Today).

A fragile peace reigns in Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia. King Alfred's son Edward and formidable daughter, Aethelflaed, rule the kingdoms. But all around the restless Northmen, eyeing the rich lands and wealthy churches, are mounting raids.

Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the kingdoms' greatest warrior, controls northern Mercia from the strongly fortified city of Chester. But forces are gathering against him. Northmen allied to the Irish, led by the fierce warrior Ragnall Ivarson, are soon joined by the Northumbrians, and their strength could prove overwhelming. Despite the gathering threat, both Edward and Aethelflaed are reluctant to move out of the safety of their fortifications. But with Uhtred's own daughter married to Ivarson's brother, who can be trusted?

In the struggle between family and loyalty, between personal ambition and political commitment, there will be no easy path. But a man with a warrior's courage may be able to find it. Such a man is Uhtred, and this may be his finest hour.

Award Winner!

With a new introduction by bestselling true crime author Ron Franscell.

For twenty-five years, the trusted family doctor in a small Wyoming town had been raping and molesting the women and children who most relied on him. Mostly Mormons, the naive victims sometimes realized on their wedding nights the truth about what had happened in Dr. Story's office.

In riveting detail, veteran crime writer Jack Olsen tells the searing story of a small group of courageous women who decided to bring a doctor to justice — and unearthed a legacy of pain and anger that would divide their families, their neighbors, and an entire town Publishers Weekly: This masterful book by the author of Son, as much a searching sociological study as a true-crime narrative, tells what happened in Lovell when these happenings came to light: the community lost its bearings and the doctor was convicted of rape.

Kirkus: From popular true-crime veteran Olsen (Son; Cold Kill; etc.), the widely publicized case that tore a small Wyoming town apart when the local doctor was accused, then convicted, of raping patients under the guise of giving them pelvic examinations. Lowell, Wyoming, was a town divided largely along religious lines: a Mormon majority and a Baptist minority. When Dr. John Story arrived to start up a practice, he found a warm welcome: a doctor was needed and, though he was a Baptist, his strict habits (which led him to start his own, more fundamentalist church) won the respect of Mormons who flocked to him as patients. But in 1983, after years of suspicions they had tried to dismiss, two sisters came forward with accusations of rape, inspiring dozens of other women (some elderly) to at last speak up. Some victims had been silent because of the Mormon code that seemed to hold women responsible for any extramarital sex; others had taken their case to the police (and not been believed), to Church leaders (who told them to switch doctors), and to the medical association (which did nothing). The 1983 accusers were vilified by the town (even by many Mormons, some grateful for Story's medical care, others sensitive to his claim that the case was a Mormon conspiracy); some lost their jobs and businesses, but Story was eventually convicted and is now doing 15-20 years. Engrossing true drama--and a more balanced than usual picture of Mormon life and values.

Thanks, TM. I saw the Prime Reading banner on Amazon today, but it never even occurred to me that I could use it to get WS deals. Hopefully Audible will pay me for my disloyalty when I cancel my current free subscription.

I wonder, has anyone checked to see if you can borrow the Audible title for $0, like you can on KU?

I wonder if they're going to come out with a Prime lite. Give us 2-day shipping, toss out the rest. In the neighborhood of, oh, say $25/year?

YW

So far, no audiobooks are available with this new benefit like they are with KU. Maybe Amazon will add a few in time.

Currently, free audiobooks are available through Audible Channels, another free Prime benefit. So maybe that's as far as Amazon is willing to go. Time will tell.

When they've already got you paying $99 a year, whether or not you use anything more than 2-day shipping? Why on earth would they bother to lower the price!?

[ I agree ... I'd buy that. Right now, I try very hard to do a Prime-Borrow once a month, so I get more out of my Prime membership than just the shipping. But that's all I use, and I'd love to pay less to get just the shipping deal. ]

I use all of Prime's media content -- audiobooks, ebooks, music, video. I more than get my money's worth from the $99 yearly fee.

Great! I wasn't even aware of the audiobooks. I occasionally watched the videos (documentaries, of course), but the quality was uneven, to put it politely.

I suggest a two-tier service:
$29--unlimited two-day shipping.
$99--the works.

So, how about it, Jeff (Bezos)?

The free audiobooks (50+ titles, streaming only) are available through Audible Channels for Prime. This feature is exclusive to Prime members and includes the same content as the regular Audible Channels in addition to the audiobooks.

Paid Audible members get Audible Channels as part of their subscription, but it does NOT include audiobooks. The Prime version has more content and is a better value.

See this thread for more details --> Audible Channels

BTW: Audible Channels includes non-fiction stuff, including The Great Courses. See below.

Quote:

Is there anything indicating time limits on borrowing the books? The info seems extremely limited.
