Automatic image conversion
2.67 new feature - Allow reading more image formats as covers (All images will be converted to JPEG when stored)
Will PNG images also be converted, or it only applies to TIFFs? BTW, what image formats are now allowed as covers in Calibre? Thanks. |

Anything which Qt recognizes as an image. You can see the list by running the command:
Code:
calibre-debug -c "from PyQt5.Qt import QImageReader; print([bytes(x).decode('utf-8') for x in QImageReader.supportedImageFormats()])" Aside: Linux distro packages may be different than the official calibre releases. My from-source Arch Linux install with system Qt5 only lists [u'bmp', u'cur', u'gif', u'ico', u'jpeg', u'jpg', u'pbm', u'pgm', u'png', u'ppm', u'svg', u'svgz', u'xbm', u'xpm']. I assume it processes every image format known to mankind, hence the exclusion tweak. AFAIK, PNG files have always been regarded as a cover when they're dropped into the Book Details sidebar. BR |

Hm, a bit puzzled here
![]() I posted in the Calibre Editor section, thinking it applies to changing covers during an edit session. I really wouldn't want to add an image to the book (say, PNG) and have Calibre automatically convert it to JPG. That's not the case with the new feature, right? And what does it mean "to store image file types as ebooks"? @eschwartz How do I run the command? I'm using Calibre Portable, BTW. |

But this wasn't in the Editor subforum (although I guess it could have been moved before I ever saw it).
And the feature refers to Drag-and-Drop onto the Book Details pane in the Library. ... The calibre-debug.exe command can be run from the program folder in your calibre portable installation. |

Allow reading more image formats as covers Add a tweak in Preferences-Tweaks to exclude some images types The githib entries have links to the relevant launchpad requests. I moved your thread, as I didn't want others thinking the change was related to the Editor. The launchpad tickets referenced in the What's New entries are a good source of background information (i.e. the why) about changes.
