I started using Calibre in April of 2016. It's taken me several months to add almost 6000 books, just finishing last week. Then I upgraded to the latest version, and absolutely hate the new splash and logo. Yuck. Funny how one dissonant chord can ruin a whole song, one wart the whole face. It's like a fingernail on an old chalkboard.

I guess the old splash screen helped feed the illusion that my ebook collection consisted of "real" (hardbound) books; imagine swapping out all the detailed covers in the database for washed out smartapp generic-looking book covers. Please, allow the old splash screen and icons. |

If you don't like the splash screen just disable it in the Preferences! How much easier could it be? A lot easier than using your first ever post to MR to moan about it IMHO.

Jackie, for some reason (maybe because I'm use MacOS) I don't get a "splash screen" but Calibrč opens direct to my library. I don't recall disabling the screen but when I looked in Preferences, I didn't see where the disable/enable setting is located. I checked the "Look & Feel" and "Behavior" items under the "Interface" section plus "Tweaks" & "Miscellaneous" under the "Advanced" section. Could you please point me to where I would find the splash screen enable/disable setting? Thanks in advance.

I'm using Windows10. On mine it's Prefs - Look&Feel - Main Interface tab - 6th item from top in right-hand column, checkbox labeled 'Show splash screen at startup'.

I missed it. Yes, it is unchecked so that explains why I don't see it. It must have been unchecked way back when I was using Calibrč 1.x or real early in 2.OK, just for s & g, I enabled the splash screen to see how it looked. Man, it is even uglier there than the application icon; disabled again. Last edited by romad; 09-08-2016 at 03:39 PM. Reason: Splash screen trial results. |

My apologies. I'll be quiet and go along with everything from here on out and never voice my opinion on anything regarding this application again; or if I do, I'll check with you to make sure it's okay. Again, please forgive my impertinence. I swear it will never happen again.

Apparently the problem is that high dpi screens can't display the old version in the sizes needed. What we need is a good graphic designer to reproduce the logo in the larger sizes required by Kovid and give them to him gratis. That way he can then add the option of which splash screen graphic to use without wasting his time/money that is better used on improving the actual nuts & bolts of the application.

Oh, btw, I didn't have Copy to Library in the main toolbar; I did have Choose Library, but as it is not needed, I removed it. Last edited by romad; 09-09-2016 at 12:09 PM. |

Calibre is a free, open source, incredibly useful application that many of us rely on to side load ebooks to our devices. Without it the options available to us would be severely limited.

If the creator of the application wants to change the icon and prefers the new look, I don't know how we can reasonably criticize this decision. Also, as he previously stated, the application is open source - so if it bothers you that much you can go through the process of changing it. |

All I SUGGESTED was HELPING him by getting the graphic(s) needed AT NO COST to him. I don't see the splash screen, I don't have either "Copy to Library" or "Change Library" in my toolbar, and I have already changed the icon displayed in my Applications folder and in the Dock, so I have taken the steps I needed for my purposes.

As for "open source" basically then if I was a programmer, I could take it, make any changes I wanted, then release it under my name. Sorry, I have too much respect for what he has accomplished to EVEN make such a suggestion. I may not agree with his decision, but that doesn't mean I can't make suggestions. |

Kovid took the opportunity of updating the icon for hidpi, to also switch it to an icon he prefers.

It is obviously not a matter of "too much effort" -- he specifically said he likes this one better. He also has a good point, that an application icon is the application's identity -- having two of them (two identities) is a bad idea. |

True, but both the icons make clear the application's identity; just in different ways. However, as you say, he owns the application so he can do what he wants with it.

I get the argument that you can just turn the splash screen off if you don't like the new one.

For me though it's not just that I don't like the new one, but that I really liked the old one. When it first appeared some time back, my reaction was, "Wow, that's cool!" My first reaction when this new one appeared was, "Argh, that's ugly. Did I break something?" If this is what Kovid, likes, then it is. I'll turn off the splash screen on the computer I just installed, and I'll probably never update the computers that have the old version. Calibre reached the "no significant bugs or feature gaps" for me several years ago -- it's an awesome tool that does everything I want, so updates are just gilding the lily anyway. For me. They undoubtedly bring new features that are useful for others. Last edited by unkilbeeg; 09-16-2016 at 06:21 PM. |
