Calibrč 2.66 Application Icon

The icon for the Mac Calibrč is a washed out, childish pastel very similar to the icons used with iOS starting with iOS 7. Please return to the rich, realistic icon used with 2.65.1 and earlier.

Not going to happen, the old icon was only available in sizes too small for high dpi screens. Not to mention that plenty of people prefer the new icon, myself included.

I'm sure there are hundreds if not thousands of extremely competent graphic designers that can reproduce the old one in the larger sizes you need. Fortunately with Mac OS a user can replace application icons with ones of their choosing, so I've done that with Calibre 2.66 - it now has the earlier design.

As much as I would prefer to have a splash screen when Calibre is opening, I turned it off since the new logo is not pleasing to me. None of the other icon changes bother me (honestly hadn't noticed any difference until @BetterRed pointed out Copy to Library, which I actually like better - probably because I'm using custom icons already??). The splash screen though, looks flat and unappealing. Shame we can't choose regular or High DPI splash image, but that's probably way more difficult to implement than is worth it

No, on my iMac the application opens to the library so fast, I didn't see the splash screen.

And hundreds probably don't. Where is the harm in providing users the OPTION to use the classic icon or the iOS icon?

Of course, options are completely cost free.

The application icon is part of the identity of an application. As such, it is the *one and only* icon you cannot customize in calibre. Historically, you could customize it as well. I removed that ability in 2.66, deliberately, and it is not going to change.

And if you are really that bothered by an icon feel free to modify the calibre source code and run it with whatever logo you like. Instructions on how to do so are in the User Manual.

The new icon is better and I absolutely approve of improvements for hiDPI screens, although I think it could be improved on further by stylizing it a little more on the left side. Right now, the book on the far left with "CALIBRE" on it looks more realistic than the other two and leaves the icon feeling unbalanced.

The source code for the icon is here: https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibr...rc/calibre.svg

Anyone is welcome to make refinements to it and I will consider including them. But note that refinements must be just taht, refinements, not fundamental changes to the icon.

As I said, I already changed it using Mac OS. It now looks like a Mac application icon instead of an iOS app icon.

Yes, it does bother some people to have one application icon in a group be radically different from the hundred other icons!

Yeah, not a fan of the new icon. Too overly simple, to where it is hard to tell that they're even supposed to be books. The overly simplistic style can work, but if everything is designed for it from the get go. Applying a different style to something that was originally something else doesn't always work well.

Unhappy +1 dislike

I will add my voice to those above: the new icon looks childish and cartoonish to me. It looks ok when it's small (as on the menu), but the opening splash screen looks like a massive downgrade from the previous one, which was far superior. I even thought it was a bug at first. It's not a deal breaker: Calibre is still a great program, but... too bad.

It is a 'No frills logo'

You should have seen the one back in 2011. This one looks deliberate
