For those interested, this link describes how to force the update (eg if you are not on the Fast ring; also because not everyone on the ring is targeted at the same time). It involves stopping Insider Previews and restarting them. http://www.windowscentral.com/how-fo...-14901-your-pc
That upgrade process is normal for the Preview Builds even when Microsoft once released two previews with sequential build numbers.

Take it with a grain of salt since I've only tested with my H2O, and only with a Win10 virtual machine, not a real Win10 PC.

Just because it works for me doesn't mean it will work for you. Use at your own risk.

Backup your files first.

To install, copy KoboRoot-fatpatch.tgz » .kobo/KoboRoot.tgz

[yes you have to do that on a PC that still sees the KOBOeReader drive, or with a Linux LiveCD - someone else will have to find/write a Windows program that does this directly in Win10]

After installing the mod, the reader will reboot, display a fat clown, and reboot again. At that point the mod performed the changes and removed itself (you have to reinstall the mod to re-try), and things should just work.

If you use this, please report back whether it worked or not.

Edit v2: Updated to have a longer delay before the operation starts, maybe that works better for older/slower devices

Edit v3: There was a bug that affected devices with 2GB storage which has FAT32 backup sector in a different place. Unbelievable.

Bug Notice: This may cause power/screensaver settings to vanish after applying this mod. I'm not sure what's causing this yet. Workaround: rename the .kobo/Kobo/Kobo eReader.conf file to make Kobo return to default settings.

Edit v4: There was a syntax error that could cause the mod to get stuck and never reboot.

2016-08-13 after Win10 update Kobo Aura did not connect to my Computer and Calibre.
I tried this patch and it works really fine. Thanks a lot!!!
Kind regards to the fat clown.

The KoboRoot-fatpatch-v4 now working! Win 10 AU 1607 14393.67 and Calibre OK for Aura H2O.

So, may be safe do not use build 1490 from the fast ring. From Dona Sarkar: these builds may include more bugs and other issues that could be slightly more painful for some people to live with.

After Kobo update, my Windows 10 Ver 14393.51 could not see Kobo, of course.
I opened MiniTool partition wizard, and changed the partition Type ID to Fat32 LBA, applied the change, and bam! Windows can read it just fine. Why this worked? I have no idea... lol
This works like a charm for me! Thank you very much!!
"Partition Type ID to Fat32 LBA" did the trick!!

I've got Windows 10 Insider Fast Ring running inside a VM. This is running the first AU update, build 14901. This one does indeed recognise the Kobo immediately, and without problems. I've installed Calibre in it, and as 14901 recognises the Kobo Aura on the USB connection, I've been using Calibre all day now without any issues.

I wouldn't recommend running Fast Ring on a production machine, though, because doing so introduces other issues. This for example is according to MS a known issue for 14901: "Adobe Acrobat Reader crashes when you try to launch it."

Update. My VM has just updated itself to build 14905. Kobo Aura H2O still running rather well.

Like FreeKobo says in #2I5: I opened MiniTool partition wizard, and changed the partition Type ID to Fat32 LBA, applied the change, and bam! Windows can read it just fine. So no (re)format is needed!!

The KoboRoot-fatpatch-v4 was working. But after reboot (both Windows 1607 and Kobo) return to Insert disk.

Try the MiniTool Free partition manager at
http://www.minitool.com/partition-ma...zard-home.html

Select "Partition Type ID"
change from 0x0B FAT32 to 0x0C Fat32 LBA
then "Yes"
then "Apply"

KOBOeReader appears in File explorer. So format not needed, seems no data lost.

Thanks to all, may be the easier trick.

How this works is a mystery considering there is no partition table / partition type exported by the Kobo. The Kobo has a partition table, but what it exports is the partition itself without table.

Oh well, this whole issue is a conglomeration of randomness...

After MiniTool:
1- KOBOeReader always visible after several reboots for both Windows and Kobo. The modification is persistent.
2- but MiniTool displays: Current system ID is "0x0B FAT32"

No more LBA as set. mystery, mystery

Problem fixed in latest windows update

Hi, I also had the problem with windows 10 AE not showing the KOBO reader in the right way.

Today I received update Cumulatieve update Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-systemen (KB3176934)

I can confirm that with this update the problem has been fixed. Connecting the kobo reader via USB now results in the expected behavior (showing the reader as drive and accessibele).

I'm aware that this update is still in the preview program, however I'm not in the fast or slow ring but in the release preview ring. This means that we can expect that this fix will be pushed to public very soon.

Windows 10 patch KB3176934 has been released

Checked for updates (Settings / Update & Security) and installed two updates now available to all: KB3176934 and KB3176936. My Kobo Glo is now seen by Calibre.
