Alternate OS for Kindle DX (white)?

I found that an alternative OS for almost all Kindles is Duokan, but I was wondering if it's open source and if it works with the Kindle DX (the wiki doesn't mention it, but some posts here do)..
Using that OS will avoid the "Big Brother" feature of Amazon, right?

Are there other OSs beside that one?

Duokan is not an alternative OS; it's Linux, the same OS as any other Kindle. It's just a different reading application, as is (for example) KOReader. Duokan is not open source, and is not terribly popular around here because its developers take the work of people at MR and give no credit for it.

Duokan is a closed-source commercial rip-off app containing GPL open source code, and it has stolen from our developer community here as well, while violating open source licenses and being incompatible with our hacks. We do not support it here, but there is a thread dedicated to Duokan nonetheless.

It may be possible to port Android OS to kindle devices, but somebody has to be interested in it enough to devote the time to develop and support it. The are hints (adb server) that newer eink kindles may have official amazon Android OS in the future.

In exchange for the Amazon Big Brother, you get locked into the Duokan store (which is, or nearly is, out of business).

You will have to get your support for it from miui.com

Ok thanks, I'll avoid it then.. but are there other alternatives out there? OpenInkpot? Would it work?

My main concern was to avoid Amazon services and its "Big Brother" feature, without doing too much tricky stuff, but I guess I have to (I got this device just because I've found it at a very decent price, otherwise I would have avoided Amazon completely)

Sounds like you might be interested in the BBB Firewall (Block Big Brother).
It is a KUAL extension.

Just leave the 3G radio turned off and sideload your books. Problem solved.

I've been too much privacy-aware that I'm not able to trust a simple method as this one lol

If the radio is turned off, it can't talk to anything. What concerns do you have about that? Sometimes the simple method is all you need.

That was three years ago, how would I know? I only wrote it.
Read the description of it in the KUAL extensions thread, that lists the devices tested on.
