I hope someone can help me with this:
My old PW1, it has usbnet installed. The usb connector is bad now, it can charge but there is no data connection. I could still connect via ssh and upload books that way, I have done it before in the past. But I don't have that computer that has the ssh key on anymore, and I believe I changed the root password. - My fault... I tried logging in as 'framework' with password 'mario', but maybe that only works for older devices. Is it possible to change the root password on the device itself? I saw 'un; password new_pass' would set a new password but even that didn't seem to work... Any advice? Thank you. |

Try a different cable.
Since you changed computers, you may have changed cables also. why? USB cables are available that are 'power only' (no data leads) and they look just the same as the 'power & data' cables. |

(I tested with my other kindle just to double check, the cable is fine.) It's the usb connector, I'm just lucky it accepts power, but yeah, no data. This kindle got a little damage to it, although it still works ok. (apart from this problem... ha) As I said above, I thought it would be ok by using ";un password abc123" - but ssh still doesn't let me in. Was this functionality removed? I see some text quickly printed to the bottom of the screen when I enter this, so something must be happening. I'm assuming the root user is still called root. --This may be the issue-- Possibly I disabled password auth in the usbnet config, and set it to only use ssh keys? I can't see the the config file so I don't know if that option is even there... I forget. Maybe resetting the usbnet to default (I see that option in the KUAL menu) - that would help? Although it might lock me out completely from this device, so I'm a bit worried. Thanks again. Last edited by zxczxc; 08-10-2016 at 12:29 PM. |

Do you have Kual installed? One could create a special package to change the password or to modify the ssh key. Installing kterm may also help, if available for PW1.

Chicken-and-egg problem -- you cannot mount the userstore to copy over kterm or a custom package.
... Now, if you had kterm installed initially, you would not be in this situation. Because you would have a shell prompt running on your Kindle, you could do anything you needed without involving another device. Or skipstone could be used to download things. But as it is, you might need to use the serial port to get access to the internal storage. The serial port is separate from the USB port, it should still work. ![]() |

@zxczxc: Can you disable/toggle usbnet in KUAL and access the Kindle over USB (standard file protocol) or is SSH always enabled?
With access to the /mrpackages and /extensions folder you should have all needed options, I hope. |

Try access as user "framework" without password - my PW3 just told me: "User account 'framework' is locked (But we're letting you in because we're a nice Kindle
![]() I'm not root but can write to extensions anyway or "cat /etc/passwd". |

Oops -
I just made the same mistake Yourcat keeps making - no USB storage access over broken connector. Hmm.... Sounds like it is time to replace the connector. You will need a hot-air re-work station to do that job. |

"Is it possible to change the root password on the device itself?" was the initial question. There's no point resetting the root password if the access is physically broken.

Do 'cat /etc/shadow' and run a cracker on it (JOHN or equivalent). Though no longer unsalted DS3 if you changed the password, so good luck there. Can you get into diags?

@geek: I also have the root account, no issues for me so far with my PW. I was just looking for another login option and logging in locked accounts is nice.

Thanks for the help everyone. With ssh access, this kindle still has a purpose (I can add books via ssh etc) - so I am just trying to log in.
Yes, no usb data. I have KUAL, the usbnet extension, I can enable/disable, reset the usbnet settings, all that stuff. I think I tried to log in using 'framework', but maybe I didn't try a blank password... I'll try that now, thanks. (edit - didn't work) I can't really do any hardware modification to this, it would cost some money to set up and beyond my level of expertise! (If I could I'd be happy to.) knc1 - I think telnet is usb only, although I'll double check. I have no kterm, no skipstone. Honestly, is my idea of trying to change the root password via the 'search bar' a bad idea? I read it in some thread here. (I don't mean to keep going on about it!) I didn't any of you mention it, I would have though it would be perfect to use now - yet as I said it didn't seem to work! But I have a feeling it is because I disabled password auth in the usbnet config. Is that a valid concern, is it possible to disable pass auth in the config?
