No takers? I was afraid poetry might not be a great hit...
A few hints: 1. It's a famous Romantic poet (and visual artist) talking about the author of one of the most famous loooong religious poems in the English language. 2. It's actually one of the most famous poems by one of the most famous English Romantic poets. Think daffodils. (But it's not that poem.) 4. Scientific minds should easily be able to guess who is speaking here. It's also the poem's title. The author might be a bit harder: also a Romantic, and notorious as a political radical. 6. Utter silliness. Actually one of the American poems everybody knows. The fabric softener joke may only work for Europeans though. |

1. Blake talking of Milton
2. Wordsworth talking of birth. The title is eluding me, though. 4. A cloud. Your description sounds like Shelley. |

1. Which English poet was - according to which other English poet - of which mythological creature's party without knowing it? (3 points)
- Blake talking of Milton - Shayne Parkinson - (But of whose party was Milton?) 2. What is "but a sleep and a forgetting", and according to which poet? And what is the title of the poem? (3 points) - Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting according to Wordsworth - Shayne Parkinson. The title of the poem is "Ode. Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood" - Bookpossum 3. "Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss, / Though winning near the goal..." Why can't the poor guy even get to first base? And which poet put him in that position? (2 points) - Because he's on a Greek vase, put there by John Keats in his "Ode on a Grecian Urn" - Bookpossum 4. "I am the daughter of earth and water, / And the nursling of the sky..." Who says that in a poem by which author? (2 points) - A cloud says that in Shelley's great poem "The Cloud" (one of his best, in my humble opinion) - Shayne Parkinson 5. How many birds at Coole? And which sort of bird? And which poet put them there? (3 points) - Wild swans, W.B. Yeats - Bookpossum (Number of birds still open) 6. Mourned lover loses an "e" and turns into a fabric softener. Which colour is the bird? (2 points: one each for the woman's name and the colour of the bird) - The bird's colour is black. - orlok, the woman's name is Lenore - pdurrant. 7. The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side is the title of an Agatha Christie novel. Which poem by which poet is quoted in the title? (2 points) - The Lady of Shalott - pdurrant. Alfred, Lord Tennyson - Bookpossum It's a tie now between Bookpossum and Shayne Parkinson (6 points each). pdurrant has 2 points and orlok has 1 point. 2 points are still up for grabs: Whose party was Milton of, according to Blake? How many wild swans are there at Coole? Last edited by doubleshuffle; 08-05-2016 at 12:19 PM. |

Come on, folks, we still have a tie for the winner. Think hard: Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Who is the official hero? Who cares? But who is the secret hero? It isn't that hard, even if you have never read it (and believe me, as much as I love poetry, I haven't read the whole thing...) If it ain't God, it can only be...
Please, Shayne or Bookpossum - end this. |

Oh, and the number of swans is a prime number, and it is the nth prime number, with n being itself prime. And the number we are looking for is then 3n+8.

Okay, is it Lucifer? I've never read it.
For the swans, mathematics was never my thing, but we must be talking about 11, 17, 23, 29, 41, 47, and now I am running out of fingers and toes. But from your clue, n should be 1 and so the answer is 11. PS. Even if either answer is right, someone else should have a go at the next quiz. Shayne? |

I'm afraid I'm a bit under the weather at the moment, so anyone who would like to set the next quiz, please feel free.
