The problem is that the charging indicator doesn't even light up. I'm still trying to recover it vía software update. |

Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=512 count=1 You will probably have to run that command with sudo. ... You could also use fdisk to delete the partition, or similarly the abundance of disk utilities out there. GNOME comes with `gnome-disks`, for example. |

However, others have reported the same USB device code (1949 : DEAD) for kindles after they ERASED their flash (a serial port command). Here is a thread that begins a successful recovery of a "1949 : DEAD" device: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=269099 It is quite possible that your firmware was corrupt on download. Could you please verify the MD5 of the downgrade firmware image that you used? We have had others here with similar (though less serious) problems from firmware with an incorrect MD5. @all: We are planing a simple 'package' for each download what will help reduce the occurrence of bad files being used. We can't make a use test the download, but we can make it easier if they chose to test it. All part of the move to a different (commercial) distribution system, someday, RSN. |

End of day #10 report updated early.
Tried to cut down on the tl;dr related trouble reports. It isn't exactly "Cliff's Notes" (yet) but perhaps more people will reach the detailed steps this way. |

I do not see any factory default files for K5 that end in .bin. How did I get myself into this mess of hyper specific kindle hacking bullshit? I was linked here by a news story that made it sound easy.

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=186645 That is the jailbreak you need. They have to be different because each kindle has a different firmware. They were referring to easy as per the instructions. Enjoy and if you have any questions about the instructions ask in that thread. |

I have successfully jailbroken and updated my KOA back to 5.8.1.0.1. Does anything actually work with the KOA yet? In particular I'd love to use the screensaver hack.

If from NiLuJe's snapshots thread. Forum index, prefix filter: Tools, click: "Show Threads" Most of those things have options and controls in the form of KUAL menu entries, and KUAL will not run on the KOA. But they also have a manual version of those options and controls in their configuration files - see directions packed with each. You will need the most recent 'hotfix' package - If not sure, get it and install it (again), it will not hurt anything even if already installed. You will need the most recent build of MrPI - Install it (it is one of the "un-zip into correct place" packages). Directions included in package. On the KOA you run MrPI with a main page, search bar command: ;log mrpi Other than the above change in how to activate the package installer, all of its directions remain the same. Report problems in the related thread (last entry of its description line in the 'snapshot' entry is a link to the related thread). |

Instead of linking all the jailbreak threads in the first post, perhaps just link the jailbreak index sticky?
