Oh and little secret: you can convert epub to a kindle friendly format with Calibre.

Push the filename:
DO_FACTORY_RESTORE
(all capitals, no extension, no contents) onto the visible root of USB storage (again).

You may need a scripted loop on a Linux box to get it done in small time it is visible.

I tried the while loop to no avail.
I'm checking syslog trough a tail -f and get this output several times while connecting the Kindle in a debian-based distro. This is the whole process, from start to end (when I get the "this kindle needs repairing" message):

So, it seems that it's impossible to mount it correctly event on Linux.

Update:

Using a portable version of Ubuntu on a flash drive I was able to mount my PW3 and saw that there was a SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION folder in root with the DO_FACTORY_RESTORE file (the SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION folder was not visible through Windows even if hidden files were visible). I deleted the file and folder in root so that it was 100% empty and was able to touch the DO_FACTORY_RESTORE file alone and then unmounted the Kindle.

Result was the same... Device needs repair Error code 2

Let me know if you have any other idea!

That is the "dead battery" fake 0MB usb device, used to keep the host from powering down USB while charging the kindle identification for a totally dead battery than cannot be charged. It indicates that your kindle battery is very discharged, but may also indicate ERASED firmware. Charge it for a couple of days on a wall charger (very slow trickle charge in that mode), then try slipping that file onto it. Be sure that your kindle has a full battery charge before attempting repair. See this update below:

Is it possible your kindle battery was discharged before firmware updates compelted? Not good if so, you MIGHT need to go the serial port route in that case. But charge it first and try again.

There is a GOOD REASON why charging the battery is listed as the third step in the "step by step" in the first post in this thread.

When we get all of the special cases figured out, then I can start to simplify the directions.

Just as a data point - I was able to downgrade my KV from 5.8.1 to the factory image, jailbreak, and install MrPI without any issues by following the well-written instructions on the first page.

To those who had package problems after a FW update to the newest version post-jb, a quick re-installation of those packages was all I needed to get things working again.

Big thanks to everybody in the first post who's credited with making this all happen!

It's about spotting kernel events (roughly) associated with device nodes appearing or disappearing and doing stuff. The 'stuff' might be fiddling permissions, creating symlinks, or running arbitrary programs, like a mount && touch && umount

Yes, but then the default files (dictionaries and such) will be missing (restored on factory reset).

No, not really, Windows does not support the combination of special options the Kindle system uses.

Better to wipe the mbr and disk label in the reserved area of storage and let the Kindle re-format it on the next boot.
