Not quite that out of line in a magical world.

How about a movie reboot featuring Robert Downey, Jr. and Gwenyth Paltrow as Harry and Hermoine together in romantic lead roles.....

By killer zombies, I assume are referring to Voldemort's army of Inferi?

...

I have always wondered why, for a supposedly terrifying form of dark magic which scares the #@$% out of the average wizard and creates deadly and difficult-to-destroy killing machines, they never appeared except when they failed to protect an abandoned hiding spot for the locket.

Of course they are not there in the book. Makes it more scary. Or at least that may be the reasoning behind it. Just like monsters under the bed. In a children's book you just make up stuff without having to actually show how scary they potentially are. Hope the imagination of kids creates enough fear. As adult I read "monsters under the bed" and I am thinking "wow, how soon is someone going to stick an arm under the bed."

It was all a fevered dream when Harry was shot in a drive-by and was at death's door in the ER.

Back in the older movies, a lot of stuff happened off screen. While it may have been for technical or social reasons at the time, it is actually a very effective technique.

She doesn't get a redo on Hermione/Ron, either. Unless, of course, she publishes a book eight where we find out that it was all a dream for the 11-year old Harry sleeping in his closet under the stairs. I wouldn't put it past her.
I'm sure that most of such pronouncements are in response to comments that she's received, even if we don't see those comments. It's pretty unlikely that it comes out of thin air. For example, Lupin's death has been complained about ever since book 7 came out. Rowling explained why she did it, not long after the book came out, as well as the rational for owl's death.

Same for the Ron and Hermione love interest. The books never really had any indication of that sort of attraction between Harry and Hermione, but tons of hints of the attraction between Ron and Hermione. The movies pretty much added the Harry and Hermione angle. The fans who obsessed with such things, for some reason, simply couldn't accept that Harry and Hermione didn't get together.

I think that to a great extent, her apologizes are simply her being gracious towards the fans who didn't like her choices in those regards. She does have a lot of fans who are obsessed by the subject. That happens with kids who are in the target audience of those books and seems to extend into the 20's for a lot of people.

What would you prefer her to do, be like Ellison and say screw you if you disagree with me? Author interactions with fans can be difficult. I'm sure that most authors are thinking "get a life" when they run into a fan who is that obsessed, but they can't really say it and still sell books.

I've been able to enjoy the books and remain completely ignorant of any ancillary, extra-canonical details from the author for many years. So while I generally disapprove of Word of God Pronouncements about completed works in principle, I also accept some responsibility for not exposing myself to such pronouncements in the first place. Which isn't usually all that difficult for me; I'm just not all that interested in the typical post-series, fandom/author "what-did-you-mean-by...", or "why didn't you..." discussions, after all. So I don't seek them out.

I enjoy hearing what some of my favorite authors have to say about things OTHER than their own work, but their non-canonical (or extra-narrative) opinions about their own finished works, don't really interest me that much. Mainly because once I've finished reading a work/series, it's mine. I don't give the author permission to diddle with my perception of it after the fact.

Exactly. I loved hearing Rowling say she could not go into a room with C.S. Lewis' Narnia books without picking one up and reading it. And it was fascinating for me to hear that Tolkien "rather liked" Howard's Conan stories. Would love to hear more of that sort of thing from authors.
