I'm certain I verified the image was well under 600 pixels high and less than 600x600 in total area. What was the problem? I've made smaller now. Does each dimension need to be less than 600? If so, shouldn't the guidelines just say that, as it does about the signatures?

The guidelines do, in fact, say "600x600".

Why would you think that was referring to total area? I don't believe I have ever seen anyone make that assumption here on MobileRead before...

Because the next section specifies a width for different images. I assumed there was a reason for the different ways of specifying. 600x600 is more pixels than the original I posted, so I thought it was in the size limit.

Word Of God pronouncements tend to be better accepted by authors who aren't being schizophrenic about whether or not they have ended the story.

I'm not fond of Word of God pronouncements ever; I'm in the camp that says that if it's not published, it ain't canon.

But I agree that JKR is an outlier even on the WoG spectrum. I don't have a horse in this race, especially since I thought Deathly Hallows was so poorly conceived and executed that it ruined the franchise for me forever, but her compulsion to micromanage her fans' reactions to and interpretations of her books is patronizing and demeaning. The result is that the books don't live. If there's only one possible way of reading the text, you can read it once and let it go.

And her attempts to have it every which way, as in her "apologies" for her authorial choices, most especially in regard to the unsuitability of Hermione and Ron as a couple, are a flat-out insult. She made that choice; it's done. She doesn't get retroactive points for agreeing with the fandom.

Well, some authors do it right.

Brandon Sanderson, for instance, is still in the process of writing about the Cosmere, and there is just so much sheer stuff that it can't all make its way into the books...
This is stuff that is currently being used to determine how future books are shaped. As well as not-immediately-intuitive details that were never spelled out but can't help being true regardless (if only the fans can spot it).

Ending the story, then micromanaging peoples' reactions and interpretations via retroactive Word of God pronouncements, is as you said demeaning. It's over and done with, and stands as-is -- so leave it alone.

But it is crucial in order to be a diehard fan. Of course, that is why wikis were invented.

Pretty much every author who is that successful and has that many compulsive fans have had to do this. Tolkien went through a lot of the same stuff, except that since they didn't have the internet back then, most of his pronouncements were via letter. I really don't see the issue. People ask her about the details of her imaginary world and she responds. I think that it's laudable that she is that willing to interact with her fandom.

A lot of other SF&F writers have had similar web presences at one time or another. Most gave it up over time as taking too much of their time. Baen's webboard use to have a lot of this sort of stuff going on with David Weber, et al. responding to various requests for back story.

I would love to see that. Don't think I would ever read a Harry Potter book again, but the internet in the weeks after publication would be spectacularly entertaining.

My great fear: Harry Potter The Revised Versions. Or: Harry Potter The Alternate Versions.
(Like those DVD releases with alternate endings.)
