Using Android reading apps on Android ereaders

I have often thought about buying one of the Android-based e-readers, such as the upcoming Onyx Boox Kepler Pro. However, I am concerned about how well the various Android reading apps work on these devices.

My favorite reading app is Google Play Books, and I also like FBReader. With Play Books, I am concerned about the way it handles footnotes, with a preview of the footnote sliding up into the bottom of the screen, then enlarging if you press it again. How well does this function work on Android-based ereaders? Obviously the apps are not optimized for ereaders, so I have concerns about how well they function. I realize the ereaders may have a "native" program that works quite well, but how well do the other Android reading apps work? I'd hate to buy an ereader then be unable to find a good reading app for it. Thanks in advance for any information or opinions. SteveK |

I'm also an intending-Kepler-Pro-buyer, and a big fan of Terry Pratchett (who was somewhat infamous for his humorous footnotes), so I'd also be curious as to how different Android eReaders (particularly FBReader) cope with eInk and footnotes.

One point I would bring up is that Onyx tends to have an optimised-for-eInk reading app (based upon FBReader, last I saw) pre-loaded on their devices. Admittedly, the version on my old (pre-Android) i62HD has broken footnote handling, so some scrutiny even with this may be advisable. |

I, too, am curious about the Onyx Kepler Pro (and similar devices), and Android reading apps. I'm partial to Moon+ Reader Pro myself, so would welcome anyone's experiences with using it on e-ink devices similar to the Kepler Pro (maybe a Nook Glowlight Plus, if anyone reading this has hacked theirs to add other reading apps).

I've got a kepler pro, if anybody is still interested in performance tests of specific apps: just let me know which apps you want tested (ideally with a publicly available document). I'm pretty happy with the performance of the apps I've tried so far (e.g. Xodo for annotating pdfs on dropbox - a little slow but works).
