I just got a PW2 in the mail. The auction claimed "For parts or repair. The item was plugged in but would not turn on." I plugged it in, amber LED. After a few minutes it started boot looping. After about 15 more minutes it booted to the GUI. It has minor damage to the frontlight, but looks fine with the brightness turned way down. It has a LOT of books on it. It is still registered. It does not (yet) have a wifi connection. It has old firmware (older than 5.6.5).
I backed up the userstore. It is now updating to 5.6.5 (from my link above). As soon as that is complete, I will apply this JB. It worked on my PW3, so I am confident that it will work on this PW2 as well. Update complete -- rebooting. FW 5.6.5 confirmed. Installing JB from first post in this thread. Opened experimental browser -- it is trying to load a "flight status" web page for spokaneairports.net -- interesting. Loaded file:///mnt/us/jb.html, long delay, no "jailbreak" message, but instead error popup "Application Error. The selected application could not be started. Please try again." Device Info shows: FW "Kindle 5.6.5 (2730300038)", SN "B0D4************". My content is identical to the screenshot posted by Belenos above, except no ".active-content-data" folder, and an additional "system" folder. I just restarted and then did the JB again. Still trying to display the Spokane Airports web page. Same problem as before: a long delay (about seven seconds) followed by an error message. I wonder why this JB would work on my PW3, but NOT on my PW2. Perhaps the JB is dependent on a particular data alignment that is different on the PW2? If so, perhaps an "adjustment" might make the JB work for the PW2 as well... After I do the serial JB, perhaps I can investigate and look for differences between my PW3 and this PW2. Perhaps we can make a PW2-compatible version of this JB (or so I hope). Meanwhile, time to break out the soldering iron, eh? EDIT: Just for fun, I tried again, substituting "file:///mnt/base-us/jb.html". It immediately complained (on a browser page, not a pop-up) "There was a problem loading this page. Tap the Back button and try reloading the previous page.". I took out the "base-", and this time there was a delay and a pop-up, as before. Three strikes -- no jailbreak for you, PW2! EDIT2: I see that I should have used a different JB while I was still on FW 5.3.5 (as I recall) instead: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=186645 However, I was able to confirm the problem other PW2 users are having in this thread, and I have literally many hundreds of hours of experience sniffing soldering fumes and burning my fingers on hot wires. ![]() Last edited by geekmaster; 05-14-2016 at 04:56 PM. |

I always set all my WinBoxen to show file extensions, and to show all files and folders. If all user accounts need mostly administrative level user rights just to function, what is the point of hiding stuff from you?

My bad. I didn't think that there can be hidden folders, despite the selection "hidden folders" windows didn't show them to me.

It's under the hide protected operating system files. I enable it because I always find desktop.ini files everywhere without it

The oldest PW2 firmware I could download from amazon was 5.6.2.1, and it leaves UYK greyed out (so not "downgrade attack" apparently). Is anybody aware of how to get a 5.4.2 firmware image, so the old PW2 JB can be installed? Or just getting root over serial and manually putting the JB cert in place, perhaps... |

jailbreak was originally developed on a PW2. Worked fine for lots of people. the method of executing it has drastically changed from what I developed, hence, there could be bugs. Run my original instructions if things aren't working (i.e. the menu text never changes)
