Have you tried updating to the latest firmware? I believe it would be 5.7.4

Hi! I'm getting my own Paperwhite soon (latest version with adds) and I've heard about the Kindle Collections plugin, which looks like it will come handy. I've a few questions about jailbreaking that I hope anyone can help me with. It will be my first time jailbreaking any device so I'm a bit scared. I'm new to the Kindle side as I've been using Kobo for the last 3 years so I'm unfamiliar with how it works here.

1. I get quite confused with the instructions on how to jailbreak here so I found this tutorial. Does the instructions posted there still work for the latest PW?

2. Should I do the jailbreaking with the device fresh out of the box?

3. After jailbreaking, is it possible to update the device over the air? And do I need to repeat jailbreaking everytime I update the device's firmware or will the jailbreak support future firmwares?

Btw, I'm using a Mac but if there are any steps that should be done on a Windows computer, I can do it there. Thanks to those who will reply

1) Those are out-dated, see the first post of the software 5.6.5 jailbreak sticky thread.
Yes - IF your device is running firmware version 5.6.5 - DO NOT let it connect to a network - it will auto-update before you can do anything about it.

2) Don't even turn it on before you are ready to jailbreak it

3) Yes - either by yourself or having Amazon push you an update without your knowing about it and without asking your approval.

4) Makes no difference - read the first post of the 5.6.5 sticky thread.
Forget what you read at other sites that are quoting from this one - they are almost always out-of-date.

Worth noting, though, that a new Kindle is extremely unlikely to be running FW 5.6.5, so it's probably a moot point.

Got it. btw, I plan to ask Amazon to remove the ads since I'm not based in the US anyway and I heard they do it for free for customers like me. Can I do that after I jailbreak the device or is there another jailbreak-related method that can do that? Also, just to be clear on the third one, I can leave the jailbroken PW on wifi and let it update (if it does automatically) with no issues or should I stay on 5.6.5 after jailbreak?

You have to connect to the Internet to remove ads -
So AFTER the jailbreak.

HarryT's point is valid for people purchasing from Amazon, Amazon has probably sold all the devices that where running 5.6.5

But your point about ads in your country shows the exception to HarryT's point -
I.E: Kindles can be purchased at places other than Amazon.
And those Kindles might be 'old stock' -
So stick with my precautions on the 'better safe than sorry' theory.

After both steps of the jailbreak described in the first post here - -
Then what firmware version you run is up to you (and Amazon, unless you have blocked their auto-updates).

With both steps of the jailbreak done, it is safe from Amazon updates (its 'viral')

The Voyage I purchased just today from the small local John Lewis still came with 5.6.5 and is now JB'd obviously

5.6.5 is the firmware you want. 5.7 is the updated.

sometimes ago i jailbreaked it (simpler method at the first post), i installed mrpi, kual, usbnetwork and i'm happy, thanks for your efforts

I now want to update the firmware to 5.7.4, but i don't remember if i installed the hotfix
There is any method to check if the hotfix was installed?

I've tried to install MRpackages, KUAL etc and none of it seems to have worked. When I followed the KUAL install instructions and nothing has come up on my home screen. What have I done wrong. I'm on 5.6.5.
