My most expensive ereader ever was a Sony PRS 600 at £250. That was in the days before the Kindle Keyboard was released. It may not have had the best screen in hindsight but it was made of metal and it was gorgeous. The Sony PRS 650 cost me £175.00 and the PRS 505 £150.
The highest price since those days is the Voyage at £169.99 (and I got £20 off buying it from Argos so it cost me £150). That is my limit now for an ereader. The heady days of paying for Sony devices are long gone. The Oasis offers nothing over the Voyage, in fact without adaptive lighting I think it's a step down. Amazon are basically making consumers pay over the odds for a leather case because they split the battery to make it lighter. That's not progress to me. |

![]() There are cards that use the Mastercard rate and don't charge a non-Sterling transaction fee. Edit: the Oasis is €290, using the rate I'm given by Revolut prepay (their app handily gives you the conversion rate they use there and then) I would pay £230.37 for the device plus I'm guessing less than a tenner p&p. Okay 12.6 ounces, so a little over 4 ounces heavier than the Oasis in its case. Personally the bigger screen is not an attraction for me. But I understand folks differ on this, that's why choice is good. If I owned an Oasis I would mostly be reading without the case, so I'm looking 4.6 ounces (less weight than my very small Android smartphone -- a Motorola Admiral). That 4.6 ounces, using a 6" eInk screen, impresses me.

The weight isn't an improvement if you always read with a cover (I do) and the fact that to get the battery life you must have the cover, and that is why it's so expensive it what bugs me. They are claiming long battery life which you only get with the cover, and yet claiming it's light, which you only get reading without a cover, something I would never do. All their advertising is a contradiction. At the end of the day they have split the battery which is why it must be sold with a cover and that is why it's so expensive. The new font is actually the one that's currently being used in the UI on the latest versions of the FW

Maybe we'll get it on the PW3 and Voyage in a firmware update eventually.

![]() It's obviously already on the PW and Voyage but not accessible as a user-selectable font for books. |

Actually it's surprising they haven't mentioned this 'new and exclusive' font.

I think it might actually get them into some trouble if they did, given that Ember is all over the PW and Voyage. I suppose if they carefully worded the fluff, they could get away with it.

That's the real problem with such a small internal battery, whether or not you read with the cover on or not (it's still powered by the internal battery, discharging-charging in smaller but more frequent increments). There better be a relatively easy way to replace it. |

Today's exchange rate is $1:£0.705400 $219.99 = £155.18 £155.18+VAT = £186.22 Actual UK price: £169.99 And that's because the exchange rate was different when Amazon set the UK price of the Voyage when it was released. If they were releasing the Voyage now, they would probably list it at £189.99. And this change in the exchange rates, coupled with Amazon's general policy of not changing a local price, leads to the situation where the Oasis is £100 more expensive than the Voyage in the UK, but only $90 more expensive than the Voyage in the US. |
