Death at La Fenice is the first in Donna Leon's excellent (IMO) Guido Brunetti mystery series set in Venice. Unfortunately, even the very very old backlist titles in this series are generally $10, and rarely go on sale, so be forewarned if you buy this one and get hooked. (However, in partial mitigation, lots of the titles in the series are available in ebook from all three of the libraries I belong to, so probably are available from many...)

Death at La Fenice has recently dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US, perhaps in connection with the publication a week or two ago of the latest in the series.

Spoiler:
Quote:
Death at La Fenice is the first novel in Donna Leon’s internationally best-selling Commissario Guido Brunetti series. During intermission at the famed La Fenice opera house in Venice, a notoriously difficult conductor is poisoned, and suspects abound. Brunetti, a native Venetian, sets out to unravel the mystery behind the high-profile murder. To do so, he he calls on his knowledge of Venice, its culture, and its dirty politics. Revenge, corruption, and even Italian cuisine play a role. The novel that started it all, Death at La Fenice is an entrancing mystery, rich in atmosphere.

“Few detective writers create so vivid, inclusive and convincing a narrative as Donna Leon, the expatriate American with the Venetian heart. . . . One of the most exquisite and subtle detective series ever.” — The Washington Post

The Dead Room by Robert Ellis is a repeat freebie/sale that goes up and down in price a lot. SYKM says it is a non-series title, but the blurb says it "serves as the introduction to the Lena Gamble series". Take your pick....

I just noticed that it is free again right now at Kindle US, and no one has posted it for at least a year, so I'm providing info again here.

link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0055X0OLM/

Spoiler:
Quote:
A young woman is found, brutally murdered and left on gruesome display in the “safety” of her own home. The atrocity kicks off an investigation into a bizarre string of increasingly disturbing murders, all believed to be perpetrated by someone of unprecedented savagery and cunning.

As the city’s panic rises, civil attorney Teddy Mack is thrown headlong into the grisly homicide case—and into a world of dirty politics and corrupt justice, where deceptions are as deadly as a killer’s twisted secrets. Now, another woman is about to meet the same horrific fate as the others. To end a madman’s reign, Teddy must enter his maze—a place of unimaginable terror and shocking revelations.

With his second thriller, L.A. Times bestselling author, Robert Ellis, delivers an explosive read with full-blown characters caught in a world stacked with twists and turns and an emotional intensity that burns white-hot.

THE DEAD ROOM serves as the introduction to the Lena Gamble series, and remains a truly one of a kind find.

And a few more authors with a significant number of titles at bargain prices in the Kobo India store.

mitford13 pointed out in this post that Colin Watson's Flaxborough Chronicles are RS 169 in India, about $2.50.
link: https://store.kobobooks.com/search?Q...&sort=PriceAsc

There are eight titles in the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear for Rs 98 and Rs 99, or about $1.50.
link: https://store.kobobooks.com/search?Q...&sort=PriceAsc

All ten of Ted Wood's Reid Bennett books are Rs 71, which is about US $1.05.
link: https://store.kobobooks.com/search?Q...&sort=PriceAsc

There are four pages of Shell Scott mysteries by Richard S Prather for Rs 94, which is about US $1.40.
link: https://store.kobobooks.com/search?Q...&sort=PriceAsc

Finally, both Open Road and Allison & Busby have a LOT of other random authors/titles in the RS 0 - 250 (approx US $0 - $3.75) range. With Open Road, you have to page past about 8 pages of their public domain titles at Rs 49 - although I could figure out how to sort for ascending price, I couldn't figure out how to specify a range in the Kobo search URL. (If anyone knows, please PM me or post!)

Sainsburys UK has a 99p sale and there is quite a large mystery/thriller section. I like the Sainsbury presentation, just hover over the book and there are choices to preview book etc. Don't forget to check Kobo etc to see if there is a price match. Whilst non UK people can't collect the points, Sainsbury still have many good sales we can take advantage of.

Mystery link: http://www.sainsburysentertainment.c...ach/7654540/ff

Here's the thriller/suspense link: http://www.sainsburysentertainment.c...ach/7654540/fh

Psss .... I think both links have the same, or mostly the same books ...

The last time I tried to get something from Sainsburys, it involved Adobe. That often seems to be the case with UK resellers. Unfortunately, I run a Mac and I've heard so many horror stories about ADE, I won't get involved.

It's been a while since I bought an ebook from Sainsburys but I didn't have any problems. I download straight into Sony Reader for PC and then import into calibre.

Last time, it wouldn't let me do the download without using ADE. Hence, I won't buy from them again. Besides, I already have the only titles of interest to me.

The Paris Lawyer by Sylvie Granotier has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US. This is a mystery originally written in French, translated and published by Le French Book, who specialize in translating French mysteries into English. From their website:

Quote:
Bringing France's best mysteries, thrillers, and short stories to new readers across the English-speaking world. If we love it, we’ll translate it.
Per the blurb, this won the Grand Prix Sang d’Encre crime fiction award in 2011.

Spoiler:
Quote:
The Past & Present Collide in Paris

Winner of the Grand Prix Sang d’Encre crime fiction award in 2011, for the first time in English.

“A beautifully written and elegantly structured novel of a woman's attempt to solve the central mystery of her life, along with several other mysteries along the way. It captures the reader from the first page and never lets go.” — Thomas H. Cook, winner of the Martin Beck Award, Barry Award for Best Novel, Edgar Award for Best Novel

As a child, Catherine Monsigny was the only witness to a heinous crime. Now, she is an ambitious rookie attorney in sophisticated modern-day Paris. On the side, she does pro bono work and hits the jackpot: a major felony case that could boost her career. A black woman is accused of poisoning her rich farmer husband in a peaceful village in central France, where the beautiful, rolling hills hold dark secrets. While preparing the case, Catherine’s own past comes back with a vengeance. This fast- paced story follows Catherine’s determined search for the truth in both her case and her own life. Who can she believe? And can you ever escape from your past? The story twists and turns, combining subtle psychological insight with a detailed sense of place.

“Fans of Elizabeth George and Ruth Rendell will eat this one up.” – Booklist

"This is a complex tale, skillfully told, that will keep you in suspense to the very end.” — Patricia MacDonald, Edgar-award nominee

“Full of surprises and twists that will keep you reading late into the night.” –Cosmopolitan

“This is a suspense novel with an absolutely perfect atmosphere. The writing is subtle, racy, controlled. It is written with great art!” — RTL.be

“Everything in this book—the plot, the atmosphere, the characters, and the style—is perfectly mastered from beginning to end.” — L’Echo

I really think you're worrying unnecessary. ADE has always worked flawlessly for me. If you rule out ePub bookstores that only leaves you with Amazon. (Not that there's anything wrong with buying from Amazon, of course).

Above Suspicion by Helen MacInnes has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Above-Suspicio...dp/B008QNE716/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Richard and Frances Myles are preparing for their annual European summer vacation in 1939 when they are visited at their Oxford college by old friend Peter Galt, who has a seemingly simple job for them. But in the heightened atmosphere of pre-war Europe, nobody is above suspicion, in fact the husband and wife are being carefully monitored by shadowy figures.

Above Suspicion was MacInnes’ breakthrough book, a bestseller published in 1941 and released as a movie in 1943, directed by Richard Thorpe and starring Joan Crawford and Fred MacMurray.

“Hide and seek with death - in the shadow of terror... The hallmarks of a MacInnes novel of suspense are as individual and as clearly stamped as a Hitchcock thriller.” - The New York Times

It's also 99p at Kindle UK (link here) and as part of the Sainsbury sale decribed in Lynx-lynx's post above.

And actually, now that I look at things, almost all of MacInnes' titles are either 99p or £1 at Kindle UK. I don't know if this is normal for UK; in the US her titles are mostly US $7.99.

Not standard for UK but seems to be what Titian, the reissue publisher, chose, not a special deal of the month.

Thanks for the tip.
