I'm sure this was already answered a dozen times but I find it pretty hard to filter the info that still applies from the outdated stuff.
What exactly do I have to do to get wireless ssh access to my kindle? I'm rooted/jailbroken and have kterm installed. I tried starting sshd, but that apperently isn't installed. I've heard of usbnetwork. Is that needed? Or is it even integrated in the jailbreak/the hotfix? Last edited by Eisfreak7; 03-15-2016 at 12:52 PM. |

@Eisfreak7: You do need USBNetwork. Basic documentation is bundled within.

Okay thanks
With my PW3 I need the "N_k2_dx_k3_install.bin", not the "N_k4" one, correct? |

Ah yes, I accidently clicked on the first one, which is for the older devices. Luckily I at least didn't mindlessly install it, that could have gone bad

The packages are device-locked, so it would just have refused to install

Thats good to know, and a bit of a relief
![]() Thank you for your work by the way, just got my kindle today and to a big part thanks to you, knc1 and Branch Delay I now truly own a capable linux e-ink device instead of just being able to use an amazon-locked e-reader ![]() Am I correct that everything is running under the root user? I know a kindle isn't an especially security-sensitive device, but that feels wrong anyway. |

Most things "GUI" are running as "framework" - But a lot is still running as 'root'. Security sensitive? You just visited a web-site that caused software on your Kindle to be run as 'root' didn't you? Amazon/Lab126 thought they had us under control when they started running large portions of the firmware as a user OTHER THAN 'root'. ![]() Ah, the power of Open Source software - NiLeJe took the source to the standard 'su' (Switch User) utility and patched it so that it did not do any password lookups. (Which is how KUAL (framework:javauser) can run scripts as 'root'). Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Lab126. ![]() Say again: "What security" ? ![]() Last edited by knc1; 03-15-2016 at 06:13 PM. |

Okay thats nice to know
I did, but at least I did so conciously and with a chance to vet the source ![]() And just because I have one soring wound that doesn't mean I want more. I think its weired amazon tries this "hard" to stop users from taking full control of their devices. Sure, they want to lock us in their ecosystems. But I don't think the portion of users considering a jailbreak is really significant enough to hurt them. They concept of running everything as root just "feels" wrong, so I'm happy thats not the case^^ |

You could have kept everything 'on device' - no need to trust anything that you can't look at before use - Edit: Using only the contents of the zip file and the Kindle to be jailbroken (no networking), see: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...73#post3265373 Last edited by knc1; 03-15-2016 at 09:33 PM. |

I did read the source (but of course I could only pray that the payload itself will not eat my kitten, since I have no idea how the kindle cpu operates). I did the dns-redirect method.
Maybe I didn't express myself properly, English isn't my first language |

I really was only commenting on your (very real) concerns for other readers of this thread in the future.
If someone else is also concerned about using a network public site (the two mentioned in the directions are in Canada and China) that they do not control the content of . . . . OR If setting up an 'in house' network is too challenging. . . . There is another way - requiring only the contents of the zip archive and the Kindle to be jailbroken, see: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...73#post3265373 (Another one of our regular contributors - with even less free time.) Note: I made a couple of errors in my post - I'll fix that now. Last edited by knc1; 03-15-2016 at 09:36 PM. |

Could the method that doesn't need a network be added to the first post?
