Another source for relatively inexpensive used Kindles is the Goodwill Industries auction site. When I got my current PC with Windows 8 on it I DL the K4 PC for Win 8 & Alf didnt work. Some one on another site Not MR told me to DL Windows 7 Kindle. I Not had any problems since.... 3+ years & Counting

Thanks Kevin. I won't elaborate here because it probably crosses a line. But from my limited experimentation it appears that Amazon prepared for this, and that all non-expired versions, whether sourced from Amazon directly or indirectly, support the new key encryption, at least for Kindle4PC.

Not in general. Only for older iOS and older Kindle software, where the PID was derivable from the iOS UUID.

I was just fishing around the K4PC data directory (on my Win 8.1 computer, "C:\Users\Difflugia\AppData\Local\Amazon\Kindl e") and I found an old installer. The one named "installer.exe" was the current version, but there is also an "updates" directory with a version 1.11 installer left from an old update.

Or you could download directly from Amazon. The posted download link (http://amzn.com/kindlepcdownload) is a redirect to the latest version but the old versions are still hosted.

winetricks and chocolatey are both good sources for versioned download links.
The problem is Amazon expires old versions from connecting and downloading books.

Just a thought .... Could those of you who currently have the problem, re not being able to clean amazon files, please volunteer to test Apprentice Harper's 'fix' when he initially releases it. Perhaps you could post your intention on Alf, or else on his github site.

As apprentice Harper doesn't have a mac it would be especially convenient if the mac version were 'road tested' prior to general release.

One could also PM ApprenticeHarper on MR and alert him to your willingness to be a tester as well.

My K4PC installation auto-updated to v1.14.1 this morning, and I can report that, following the upgrade, everything still works as expected. Upgrading an existing installation is, therefore, safe. This is only an issue affecting a new installation.

For what it is worth I think pre-existing installations of the tools already have the unencrypted key for the installed Kindle4PC, which iit gets when first installed and does not change with an update (at least not currently). However, Amazon has changed the encryption used for the key. So the tools will be unable to decrypt the key from a new installation. If this is correct, then problems may also occur if you uninstall and later reinstall Kindle4PC or Calibre and/or tools if the configuration files are not preserved.
