That is the only reason why your encryption keys matter, if it is your installation Kindle for PC/Mac. The moderators around here won't come down with the ban hammer for speaking with approval of DeDRMing your own books. It's the dirty thieves who download books they never paid for that get mauled. | |

Curiosity got the better of me. I updated to K4Mac 1.15.0 (from 1.13.1). No problems with Alf. (Also, everything still downloading as AZW3, if anyone's wondering.) I then created a dummy User on the same Mac, did a clean install of K4Mac, and Alf balked. Going back to my real User profile, and K4Mac and Alf still playing nicely together. Do you seriously believe that Amazon doesn't keep a close eye on deDRM tools? Even if you may think so, but it really isn't a widespread problem or even common to remove DRM. The ones that do are by far in the minority.

DRM improvement has got to be a serious source of conflict for them. I only just recently got a Kindle. I've been buying ebooks from them for years simply because I could tweak them to view on my ereaders. From my perspective that adds up to a small fortune. Now Amazon's concept of a "fortune" may is probably a bit bigger than mine, but there are a lot of folks out here like me.

I updated to Kindle for PC version 1.15 at the end of Feb, and Alf is still fine. All reports of problems I've seen so far are for fresh installs of Kindle for PC/Mac. But I'd probably hold off myself if I hadn't already updated.

Does anyone know if it's possible to copy an installed version of K4PC from one PC to another to avoid these problems? The reason I ask is that I'm about to buy a new PC, and it would be major pain not to have a K4PC installation I couldn't use in my eBook buying workflow.

Nor me. Hope the experts at Alf's blog are able to get around this issue soon.

Install the old hd in the new computer and use it as a secondary storage drive. Or get a new storage drive and mirror the old drive to it. Apache |

I doubt that would work. Suffice it to say that even if the Kindle application is fooled into thinking its hard drive hasn't changed, there are other factors in play.

The last two books I bought from Amazon I had to download straight to my pc before Alf could work his magic. Downloading them directly to calibre from my new Voyage was impossible. The extra step is a pain, but as I have hundreds of unread public domain books as well as way too many unread purchased books, I've been needing a reason to stop buying books for a while.

Just another anecdotal account: I didn't buy much from Amazon back in the day when I was all epub, but once I came around to Alf because it was too inconvenient not to have all mycurrrent books on all my devices I bought quite a bit. If future purchases can't be put on my Kobos, that's the end of that, though; I've not yet transitioned to Kindle (although I have no doubt I'll be there eventually, as Kindle will be the last man standing IRT e-ink devices). I'm also on the verge of a new computer. For various reasons including this, I should keep Old Bessie running, but still, quelle inconvenience. Funny. What with Kobo's going over to VIP-only discounts and Amazon's cracking down on de-DRMing, I may not need this thread any longer. Oh, the irony! My overbuying in recent years is looking like a better and better investment. |
