Kindle Touch/PW1/PW2 5.0.x - 5.4.4.2 JailBreak. Plus FW 5.x USBNetwork.

I have a jailbroken KPW2 on FW 5.4.5.1 and I'm wondering, if I update directly to the new 5.7.2.1 update will it keep the jailbreak? I used the kindle-jailbreak-1.11.N-r10947 at the time.

I'm confused, the info regarding 5.4.5 seems contradictory in the readme.

It says:

That could be summed up as such: if you're currently running FW *5.0.x* to *5.4.4.2*: reinstall the JB. Or if you're running FW >= *5.4.5*: install the bridge.

Then says:

*IMPORTANT notice to FW >= 5.4.5 users:*

This will *NOT* work on FW >= 5.4.5! That of course implies that you currently *cannot* jailbreak a vanilla KT2/KV/PW3 using this method.

How should I interpret that IMPORTANT notice?

Summary:
Install the most recent jailbreak from NiLuJe's snapshots thread -
Install the most recent 'bridge' update from:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...postcount=1597

The above may or may not be required in any particular situation, but can not do any harm to do both (the "belt and suspenders" theory).

@NiLuJe: why is the most recent bridge package not among the "snapshots" thread ?

@rpgmaker: That the JB won't be installable on FW >= 5.4.5. The bridge is a standard package, if your device is alread jailbroken, it's a package like any other.

Notice how the notice about the jb upgrade and that second one about FW >= 5.4.5 are in completely different sections (and collapsed by default for a reason? ^^)? .

Anyway, despite being collapsed, it was a bit outdated, tweaked it a bit.

Yes.

Or to be slightly more accurate, the bridge is a second copy of the jailbreak, wrapped in an installable package instead of relying on the jb.sh script + poisoned filename injection method.

Hi there,
a long while ago (it seems) I purchased a PW for my wife, and JB'ed it. FW must be one of the 5.3.x ones.
Now I got this reminder that in 5 weeks time I won't be able any longer to push books on that device, suggesting an update to 5.6.1.1 - would I be safe? Don't want to lose anything/anyone during the process.
BTW, what is that critical update about at all?

Install the most recent jailbreak version from NiLuJe's snapshot thread.
And KUAL and the KUAL extension MrPI - you'll need those to install our packages under 5.6.anything

Amazon is going from 20th Century crypto to 21st Century crypto on their sites.
Mostly, you need a new package of client certificates.

They (Amazon) is also tossing in some bug fixes and feature changes, but it is the new client certificates you will be needing.

Unless of course, you send your money to some non-Amazon bookstore.

So after upgrading my K4NT, I've got to adopt a different approach for the PW1, it seems. (My brain starts to hurt.)
- start with 5.3.5, in airplane mode
- install latest snapshot of JB (1.14.N-r12841)
- install matching usbnet (0.21.N-r12963) - this will enable latest mkk
- upgrade firmware to 5.6.1.1
(up to here everything like it always went...)
- install KUAL, with extensions (helper, bbb, backdoorlock, mrinstaller)
- now drop python, ssaver, ... into mrpackages and install vial KUAL
- done - ?!? (looks easier this time, actually - did I overlook something essential?)
Got to read up on CollectionsManager, and KOReader (not sure whether those are currently installed though).
Time to get it done, and to enjoy a good book afterwards!

I tried JB 1.14.N on a Kindle DX Graphite (B009), but the option 'Update Your Kindle' stays grayed out, also after a reboot (while transferred files still in the root directory).
What can I do?

USBNetwork is completely separate from MKK.
Also, if you wanted to use USBNetwork then you need to reinstall -- the firmware upgrade deleted it.

Otherwise looks good.
Yes, it is easier now, because you can use MrPI to install multiple things at once.

Got to read up on CollectionsManager, and KOReader (not sure whether those are currently installed though).

CM and KOReader are not installed unless you actually chose to install them
