Thanks for all that. I've been using a mix of this tutorial (i didn't use the ;-fc-cache in the search bar first, so it didn't work) and used the second of the chinese servers.
I've been playing around with my router settings and getting my win10 macbook to share wifi for about 1 hr and didn't get it to work.

It just finished booting up. Is the JB permanent or can an official update from amazon kill my JB?

Edit: Forgot to mention: which part of the serial number was needed here? Anyways, I have a KV I bought November or December in the US.

I realize this is probably a stupid question, but .... Can you delete the files (jb, 1.4N.bin file, etc) from the root of the Kindle after it's successfully been jailbroken and updated?

however, when I tried to install duokan or kual, the update this kindle button is just greyed out?

Any reason why this is happening?

p.s, after I disconnect the cable from the kindle it just delete the updates files

Got it to work using this info from the comment section. This worked and I didn't have to do anything about that "a". Not sure why but got the "successful" message and was able to update using the *.bin file. Now to figure out what to do with it. Haven't jailbroken my kindles before although I have "rooted" and applied custom roms to many an android phone.

I've got a better method
-download the jb.zip and unzip it
-move the "jb" file to the root of Kindle
-visit "kindlefere.com/jb/" on kindle's experimental browser
-follow instructions
-put "Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install.bin" in Kindle root
-make sure you're in airplane mode
-update kindle

I think it worked. It said jailbreak successful. I copied the bin file to the root folder and then updated it. After the reboot, the device info still shows that it's on 5.6.5
is this normal?

Yes. You are still on 5.6.5 but you are jailbroken.

Probably, but on the newest firmware, you should always use the newest of our firmware builds.

Those are in a thread titled NiLuJe's snapshots.

Set the thread index filter to; tools, press show threads button, it will be at least on the first page of the filtered list.

Back just to report that after JB last night I installed without any problems Kual, the Fonts hack and the Screensavers hack this morning. I then updated to 5.7.2 and everything (KUAL, Screensavers, Fonts) ist still there and working.
