After more researching, I found Syncplicity offers 10GB free and 100GB for $50/yr. You right click to select the files to sync. No need to move them.
Cubby gives 5GB free and 100GB for $50/yr. Also, works by right clicking. |

Second... I think many people can get into the 'Where's my stuff?!?!" problem. There are people on MR who only shop at Amazon, or Kobo, and keep all their books there, but I shop everywhere. Amazon, a few Kobo stores, Delphi, Angry Robot, Baen, Diesel and Books on Board while they existed, eBooks.com, Feedbooks, and so on, so my books are all over the place. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be able to find them all. Thus, I download them, unDRM, and keep local copies. I don't really care what happens to the online versions. How many clouds can people have? Dropbox, Copy, Box, Creative Cloud, Apple Cloud, Samsung Cloud, and others I don't even know about probably. Then your personal files could become splintered throughout the internet. |

I use SugarSync because it has two features that Dropbox does not: it will sync with any directory that I choose (not just ones in a specific spot, although it has that directory too) and I can also set up individual directories to be cloud only, rather than cloud+desktop.
It used to have a free model; I don't know if it still does (I am a paid subscriber and I can't access most cloud sharing sites from my work computer to check.) |

Sugarsync has a 30 day free trial. Cheapest plan is $7.49/month for 100GB. It works similar to Cubby and Syncplicity in selecting which folders to sync; right clicking.

I imagine those of you planning to try "OwnCloud" know that this means you have to have your own Linux server and own enough disk drive to do the backups onto? At least, as I read the online notes. Basically, you are doing your OWN backup.
Which I've always preferred anyway. I mostly use DropBox as a means to shuttle files from one computer to another, and to have a few files visible on all my iOS devices. I never count on cloud storage as my actual backup. |

I know! I always make a point to COPY the file into my DropBox area, so that it's not the only copy of it on my computer. Since a DropBox folder really *is* a local folder, as well as a "cloud" area. But I view it as a "remotely deletable" folder, so I always COPY into it, rather than merely drag.

Since the vast majority of my digital stuff is Amazon, the only cloud I need is Amazon's free unlimited cloud. No need to pay for another service.

I pay for web hosting on which I have my blog, an RSS feed reader site*, some development stuff, podcasts and an owncloud instance. Currently I have 75Gb stored there - and as such it's more expensive than Apple but cheaper than Dropbox. Although I have to say that I was paying for the hosting anyway and later decided to put ownCloud on it.
I still have Dropbox but I hardly use it now. I really like ownCloud. It works with my Windows and Linux PCs and my Android tablets and phone. You can also install apps on it, some of which are related to how to handle different file types. So I've got an epub-reader app which means I can read my books from any browser. I've also installed an app that maintains an OPDS (?) catalog so I can connect reader software to it. So I can download books from my cloud via e.g. Aldiko or FBreader directly. That's pretty cool. I am reliant on the hosting company in one sense. But all the data is mirrored on at least two PCs so I consider that a back up for my cloud. Also I also pay for cloud backup of my main PC anyway so there's a separate back up of everything there. |

Dropbox has a safety net -- you have thirty days to undelete a file, or forever if you have a paid plan. I've never actually used OwnCloud, because I've always been happy with Dropbox. Does OwnCloud allow you to save deleted/modified files in some sort of cache/Trash? Yes, it would consume more space, but that isn't the big concern... EDIT: Sure you can, thought so ![]() ![]() |

Disappointing. Used it mostly for backup, but had 40 gigs and nearly half of that used. I still have 100 gigs free Google Drive storage that I got with my Chromebook, might move everything there. BTW if you need an extra laptop, I think Google still offers 100 gigs free Google Drive storage for one year, after the year they don't remove anything, you still just have whatever free storage Google offers for Drive.

My use of Dropbox is almost entirely transferring stuff to others rather than storage. I have a small storage folder full of certain emagazines to be shared among family, but that's the extent of it. I knew of a couple of people who were devastated when their cloud company shut up shop overnight a couple of years ago. That WAS their backup. At least COPY is warning their customers in advance. |

I keep local backups, but like having the cloud as EXTRA backup.
Copy has made that very easy. I had SpiderOak for a while, but it caused issues with Calibre, so no longer use it. I have Dropbox, but it doesn't have enough space for me to backup everything I want to. I have Box, but it doesn't allow large files on the free plan I have. I have Google Drive and AT&T Locker (I think that's the name), but have never tried to upload to either. Copy currently has a backup copy of my Calibre libraries (not synced as I've had issues, so it's a manually maintained backup). Those are the main files I'm concerned with finding another cloud backup for. I would love to just put everything in Dropbox, but as others have said, their price point is more than I'm willing to pay. |
