Tools Serial Jailbreaking your fw >= 5.6.x Kindle for Dummies

I already jailbroke my kindle a year ago (5.1?),
It has KUAL and the backdoor activated... but after several months I activated the wifi... and amazon installed the last firmware... AGAIN! (I losted las JB for the same reason)

So, a couple of question:
1. if I create the folder "update.bin.tmp.partial" it will prevent it? (backdoor hacks doest work)

2. If I reinstall the JB file via update (as previous version) will it work?

You will have to install MrPI if you want to add any of our packages.
It wouldn't hurt to update KUAL also.

Ok,
I did it.

Installed the hotfix,
Updated the KUAL, PHYTON (via MRPI), HELPER, KUAL+, SCREEN SAVER HACK (via MRPI)...

First thing I try to do: "tweak battery indicator": but doesnt work... I think im missing something... I'll try with SS hack.

I tried from the begining (SS hack didnt work)

Installed the Hotfix... I didnt see the **** JAILBREAK *** Message in the settings page nor when booting...

What I am doing wrong??

@MrCaringi: The battery tweak is broken on FW >= 5.6.5.

As for the rest, we're going to need more details than "doesn't work". The simple fact that MrPi successfully installed stuff is a good start, though. (If it actually did).

I was reading others topics, and it seems like the lack of "JAILBREAK" message could mean JB already working.

So, lets start from the beggining:

Ok, Im trying to get back the SS Hack Working this way:

NOTE: Linkss folder already exist because previous installation.

So, I put the content of "kindle-python-0.14.N-k4.zip" (Update_python_0.14.N_k4_install.bin) and the content of "kindle-ss-0.47.N.zip" (Update_ss_0.47.N_k4_install.bin) in the folder "D:\mrpackages"

1. Its bad idea to install both package in one run?

unplug
open KUAL
go to "Helper+"
select "instal MR packages"

pluged kindle again:
I put MY screen saver at "D:\linkss\screensavers" (758x1011 png images),
in the "D:\linkss" are these files (without mentioning the folders):

-auto
-cover
-info.txt (only this file has a size > 0 KB)
-mounted_ss_tmpfs
-mounted_tmpfs
-pinfo
-verbose

restart kindle from settings menu, (didnt see any mesage about SS Hack when booting like the first time I installed a year ago), open a book (Eragon ), read a couple o page, push sleep button and... nothing happens.

Any ideas?

I try this way:
1. Erase LINKSS and PHYTON folder first:
2. Putting phyton and SS hack installation file at "D:\mrpackages"
3. Installing via KUA \ helper +
4. TADA!!! no LINKSS nor PHYTON folder exist on root... so... MRPI doesnt work?

Then pay attention to what MrPi is outputting during the package install, but I'm guessing incomplete JB.

1.Putting the file in the Kindle


2. Opening KUAL

Good news²: You're trying to install K4 packages, which is why it's not working .
You have a PW2 . cf. the S/N list for the gory details.


FYI: When MrPi says it's destroying the package, that's because you're doing something wrong . Here, because it didn't match your device.

1. Put THE CORRECT PHYTON FILE (I was so exited I forgot to unzip the SS Hack :P )


2. Installing via MRPI (now I saw a different message)




3. Cheking the proper Python folder was created (It does!)


4. Now installing SS hack

does anyone know where the tap for power is on the k4? I've successfully jail broken a voyage, and I have found the serial connections in another forum, but there is no mention of where they tapped power from on the k4.

Power?
What power?

Better question: What adapter are you using?

Usually the adapter is powered by the USB side of the adapter.
Some adapters require an interface reference voltage from the serial side - but only some.

Note:
Update your info box - it only mentions a PW-2, no mention of the K4 or KV.

Dumb question:
Why do you need a serial port on a K4?
The K4 does not require use of the serial port to either jailbreak or de-brick.
