I doubt that those were a part of the original 1599 edition, although I might be wrong on that.
I compared the two versions and they're typeset exactly the same. It looks like someone removed all of the extra material from the Tolle Lege Press edition and repackaged it. This is probably legal (in the US at least) because the Geneva Bible is in the public domain, but Tolle Lege did standardize the spelling and typeset it as a PDF. The Grace-eBooks file does have a working table of contents, though.

The notes and cross references are a part of the original manuscript.

Hmmm . . . . I hope that someone in-the-know weighs in on the legality issue. Without getting into reasons why, I've been under the impression that works like that are protected by copyright.

Thanks for your work on this, and sharing the fruit of it with us.

I picked up Perspectives on the Ending of Mark from B&H Academic for $.99. A little esoteric, but worth it if you're interested in the theology of literary criticism (or if you've considered becoming an Appalachian Snake Handler ).

Well it isn't a very Christian thing to do (as I wrote to a Christian spammer).

It is just possible that all the original work was done in 1599 and was just copied now by both.

Forged: Writing in the Name of God--Why the Bible's Authors Are Not Who We Think They Are by Bart Ehrman is $4.99.

B&N
Christianbook
Amazon

Quote:
It is often said, even by critical scholars who should know better, that “writing in the name of another” was widely accepted in antiquity. But New York Times bestselling author Bart D.Ehrman dares to call it what it was: literary forgery, a practice that was as scandalous then as itis today. In Forged, Ehrman’s fresh and original research takes readers back to the ancient world, where forgeries were used as weapons by unknown authors to fend off attacks to their faith and establish their church. So, if many of the books in the Bible were not in fact written by Jesus’s inner circle—but by writers living decades later, with differing agendas in rival communities—what does that do to the authority of Scripture?

Ehrman investigates ancient sources to:
  • Reveal which New Testament books were outright forgeries.
  • Explain how widely forgery was practiced by early Christian writers—and how strongly it was condemned in the ancient world as fraudulent and illicit.
  • Expose the deception in the history of the Christian religion.
Ehrman’s fascinating story of fraud and deceit is essential reading for anyone interested in the truth about the Bible and the dubious origins of Christianity’s sacred texts.

BIG Westminster Bookstore Sale on IVP Books. Many Books $1.99!

Westminster Bookstore is conducting a sale on IVP Kindle ebooks.

The sale lasts for only 72 hours. That makes the sale ending on November 27.

There are exactly 25 titles available for $1.99. Westminster says that they also have over 50 titles available from $4.99. I noticed that the regular price of one of the books marked down to $1.99 is $14.99, while one of the books in the second category ($4.99 and up) has a retail price of $48.99. You can see that this is a really good sale.

I did a spot-check on several of Westminster's sale IVP books at Amazon and none of them were marked down there below their usual prices. So it would seem that Westminster is the only one doing this sale.

To see all of the ebooks marked down to $1.99, go here. To see all of the ebooks marked down to $4.99 and up, go here.

There are also 4 sets of books (commentaries and the like) marked down. I couldn't find a dedicated webpage for those, but they are listed at the top of this webpage. Frankly, even with a markdown, I did not find the prices on these sets very compelling.

Truth in a Culture of Doubt: Engaging Skeptical Challenges to the Bible by Andreas Köstenberger (Ph.D., Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is $2.99.

Amazon

Google Play

Quote:
All too often Christians, and even Christian leaders, don’t know how to deal with skeptical challenges of the Bible and the Christian faith. Few churches address the historical questions about the Bible and the theological questions concerning the God who, believers claim, has inspired the Bible. Too often Christian scholarship has been kept at arm’s length and even viewed with suspicion by the church. Speaking and writing in this kind of environment, Bart Ehrman—professor at UNC-Chapel Hill and author of four New York Times bestsellers—has found a captive audience. Ehrman’s popularity is due in large part to the fact that he is talking about things most people never learned about in church. Some have long given up on Christianity, and Ehrman is only reinforcing their decision to depart from their Christian upbringing. Others are trying to reconcile their faith with rational arguments and find Ehrman’s books both interesting and disturbing if not appealing.

Truth in a Culture of Doubt takes a closer look at the key arguments skeptical scholars such as Ehrman keep repeating in radio interviews, debates, and in his their popular writings. If you are looking for insightful responses to critical arguments from a biblical perspective, easily accessible and thoughtfully presented, this book is for you. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive response to Ehrman’s popular works. It is presented in such a way that readers can either read straight through the book or use it as a reference when particular questions arise. Responding to skeptical scholars such as Ehrman, Truth in a Culture of Doubt takes readers on a journey to explain topics such as the Bible’s origins, the copying of the Bible, alleged contradictions in Scripture, and the relationship between God and evil. Written for all serious students of Scripture, this book will enable you to know how to respond to a wide variety of critical arguments raised against the reliability of Scripture and the truthfulness of Christianity.

Tony Merida's Brand New Proclaiming Jesus. FREE Pdf, EPub, or Kindle Mobi!

An organization called Gospel-Centered Discipleship is offering a free copy of Proclaiming Jesus, by Tony Merida. It is approximately 66 pages long.

The ebook is only 99 cents at Amazon (but 99 cents is 99 cents, right?). It is not rated at Amazon or Goodreads, no doubt because it is so new, having been published for the first time just last month. However, all of Merida's other books at Amazon are very highly rated.

Here's a short blurb about the book:
Proclaiming Jesus is a call to teach and preach that which is of first importance: the gospel. In a day in which the gospel is often ignored or assumed or placed as a matter of secondary importance, Proclaiming Jesus calls us back to the apostolic pattern exalting the hero of the Bible in every message. At the heart of Proclaiming Jesus is the belief that the gospel is what everyone needs, and it’s what everyone needs to learn to communicate.

To get the download, go to this webpage. You'll have your choice of formats: pdf, ePub, or Kindle mobi. You can even get all three if you want to! After you click on the link for one of the formats, you be taken to a Dropbox page which will prompt you to set up an account. You can avoid that by clicking on a link in small print that says, "continue to the book" or something to that effect.

My posting of this book does not necessarily mean that I agree with any doctrinal statements in the book.

Eight Hour (Ack!) Zondervan Black Friday Sale--All EBibles and an Ebook $3.99 Each.

Well, it's Black Friday in the United States.

This is the day of the year where I try to stay as far away as I can from most stores (I hate crowds). But I do check my email, and I've seen gazillions of online deals on ebooks. Most of the deals are, well, meh. But here's one that I think is worth posting.

Zondervan is having a sale on select eBibles and ebooks (actually, all but one are eBibles) for $3.99. The sale ends at midnight tonight, Nov. 27. Yeah, I know, that's less than 8 hours from now. And I know that a lot of Mobilereaders will be busy with other things today and won't check the posts on Mobileread (they really need to get their priorities straight. ha). But I just got the email from Zondervan a few minutes ago! I don't know the reason for that.

Anyway, here are the eBibles and ebook:
NIV Life Journey Bible.
The Case for Christ Study Bible, by God and Lee Strobel (author and editor).
NIV Essentials Study Bible.
Woman's Study Bible.
NKJV Study Bible.
All You Want to Know about the Bible in Pop Culture, by Kevin Harvey.

Some, maybe most, of the books have been marked down before and some, maybe most, have been posted in this forum before. I don't know if they were the same price as they are now or not.

Here's a link to the sale page. If you click on the link, underneath the thumbnails of the book covers, that says "Learn More / Buy Now," you will get a list of links to retailers where you can buy the books at the sale price.

Westminster Bookstore is offering a free pdf of Tim Challies' Sexual Detox: A Guide for the Single Guy. Direct link: http://www.wtsbooks.com/common/pdf_l...449910167S.pdf. It is 29 pages. It seems mainly to address the problem of use of pornography by single men. It is very plainspoken in its approach.

The book seems to be something like an abridgment of a larger book by Tim Challies, Sexual Detox: A Guide for Guys Who Are Sick of Porn. This free book definitely is not just an excerpt or sample of that larger book, but is intended to be a standalone book. The larger book is for sale (http://www.amazon.com/Sexual-Detox-G...s=sexual+detox). This book appears not to be for sale anywhere.
