To me Amazon has been as they describe themselves an A to Z online store that sells everything. I could better understand if they themselves decided not to sell the devices, yet they are also banning third party sellers from selling them. This is a strange move, and I would be very concerned if I was a competitor who depended on AWS. This a petty move by Amazon. They are becoming a "Smother" with their services, from pushing Prime to locking in authors for Kindle Publishing. They are becoming the defacto online retailer of everything. Let's hope they don't develop a rough Amazon brand of toilet paper, would be too bad Angel Soft.

I would guess that they are getting real support costs where people buy one of these and then call up and complain to Amazon support that they can't watch prime video on it. It's not even like Amazon is selling them itself. I'm sure there are other reasons as well.

Amazon has had requests from customers for years to get their video everywhere including on Apple and Google products. That was misleading by Amazon at best to make it sound like they were shut out by Apple and Google. They could have had Amazon Video on the Chromecast 2 years ago when it was first released. Google has an open API for developing for the Chromecast: https://developers.google.com/cast/ . The only reason Amazon did not have an app for Chromecast was Amazon didn't want to.
Chromecast is the 6th best selling item on Amazon:

They would have stopped selling it long ago if customer problems was the case. The truth is Amazon is shutting out competing products. They want to lock people into their ecosystem. If they only sold hardware and software like Apple, that would be fine. But they are selling themselves as the retailer who sells "everything". If they are shifting that focus to force out competitors and only sell their products, they have become something else and should be honest about it. Look at the timing--Google just released a new Chromecast, Apple will be selling a new Apple TV at the end of the month. Amazon is stifling competitors, only 20% of their customers use Prime Video, so what is the real issue?

I basically agree. This is just stupid. Meanwhile I'll just watch Prime Movies via Chromecast with the Google Cast extension in the Chrome Browser (like I do now). Not the slickest solution, but it works.

An Amazon search for Chromecast now gives results for Firesticks An Amazon search for Apple TV now gives results for streaming media players.

It was rumored that hundreds of thousands of these devices were sold on Amazon, so this may be a goldmine for ebay sellers of these banned items. I bought my Chromecast 2 on ebay ...
