Charles River Editors has only a couple of ebooks marked down to zero at the present time, that I see. I'm posting this one on the "Christian Interest" thread because Ephesus figures so prominently in the history of the early church, which history is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, and also the epistles to a lesser extent.

Ancient Ephesus: The History and Legacy of One of Antiquity's Greatest Cities.

Crossway Books, a publisher of books for Christians, is making Leland Ryken's The Word of God in English: Criteria for Excellence in Bible Translation available free.

The book is in the pdf format. It is 336 pages long.

Ryken is a well-respected evangelical biblical scholar who has written widely. His books get high ratings, probably due in no small part to the fact that he is easy to read.

This book is in print. It is priced $12.99 for the Kindle and $17.20 for the paperback, at Amazon. So, this offer of the ebook for free is very gracious on the part of Crossway.

Here's the direct link to the free ebook at one of Crossway's websites.

I didn't see a link to it free at www.spiritandtruth.org, just some links to a book review of the title. However, I could have missed it.

Oh, thanks for mentioning that website. I was not familiar with it. Maybe I'll find some good freebies on it.

Rose Publishing has been discounting a rotating batch of their $3.99 pamphlets to $.79 at Christianbook.

Four Views of the End Times explains the difference between dispensational premillenialism, historical premillenialism, amillenialism and postmillenialism. I can never keep track of who thinks the thousand years starts when, so it's worth 79 cents to me to have an easy place to look it up.

Though perhaps appealing to a narrower audience, I picked up three more 79 cent pamphlets that sounded fun:

10 Q&A On Magic, Spells and Divination (just in time for Halloween!)
Answers to Evolution
Christianity, Cults, and the Occult

Edit: The PDF link in the Answers to Evolution ebook gave a 404, but a Rose Publishing customer service rep emailed the pamphlet to me after I forwarded my Christianbook receipt.

The Women's Bible Commentary, Third Edition from Westminster John Knox Press is $3.19 at Christianbook and $3.99 at B&N or Amazon.

Quote:
The Women's Bible Commentary is a trusted, classic resource for biblical scholarship, written by some of the best feminist scholars in the field today. This twentieth anniversary edition features brand new or thoroughly revised essays to reflect newer thinking in feminist interpretation and hermeneutics. It comprises commentaries on every book of the Bible, including the apocryphal books; essays on the reception history of women in the Bible; and essays on feminist critical method. The contributors raise important questions and explore the implications of how women and other marginalized people are portrayed in biblical texts, looking specifically at gender roles, sexuality, political power, and family life, while challenging long-held assumptions. This commentary brings modern critical methods to bear on the history, sociology, anthropology, and literature of the relevant time periods to illuminate the context of these biblical portrayals and challenges readers to new understandings.
Mere Apologetics: How to Help Seekers and Skeptics Find Faith by Alister McGrath is $3.99 at Christianbook and Amazon. It's $4.99 at Kobo, but couponable.

Edit: I bought The Women's Bible Commentary and started to look through it and I'm very excited to give it a more thorough read. The commentaries are thoughtful and approach Scripture with a point of view that's often ignored. I was concerned that the "feminist" descriptor meant that the commentary was an attempt to rehabilitate the Bible from its male centricity, but instead the commentators are more interested in exploring the attitudes of the Bible writers (both assumed and explicit) and how those helped shape the text as we have it.

Be aware that the commentaries (that I read so far, at least) are not written from a theologically conservative point of view. This selection from the commentary on Exodus, for example, is typical:
Quote:
While ancient Israelite religion is often considered to be a form of monotheism, in some sense it might be better thought of not as strictly monotheism but as monolatry. Monolatry is the worship of a single god while acknowledging the existence of other gods.

All Is Grace: A Ragamuffin Memoir Kindle Edition
by Brennan Manning (Author), John Blase (Author)

It has been over twenty years since the publication of The Ragamuffin Gospel, a book many claim as the shattering of God’s grace into their lives. Since that time, Brennan Manning has been dazzingly faithful in preaching and writing variations on that singular theme –
“Yes, Abba is very fond of you!”

But today the crowds are gone and the lights are dim, the patches on his knees have faded. If he ever was a ragamuffin, truly it is now. In this his final book, Brennan roves back his past, honoring the lives of the people closest to him, family and friends who’ve known the saint and the sinner, the boy and the man. Far from some chronological timeline, these memories are witness to the truth of life by one who has lived it

It's apparently time for another study Bible sale. Holman has added some more HCSB Bibles (one of which is $.99) and there's a smattering of NIV study Bibles on sale. I was starting to think that HarperCollins/Thomas Nelson/Zondervan were backing off on the Bible sales since lowering many prices to $9.99 and $14.99 (and maybe they are), but I guess they're throwing us a bone. The prices aren't the best I've seen, but if you're in the market, maybe they're good enough.

HCSB Study Bibles:

HCSB Bibles are DRM-free at Christianbook and couponable at Kobo.

I still haven't really warmed up to the HCSB. I like that it sometimes translates the name of God as "Yahweh" rather then "the LORD", but it's too inconsistent about it. I really want the New Jerusalem Bible as an ebook, but I digress.

The Mission of God Study Bible is $.99. If you really need a bargain, the latest Kobo coupon contest just started.

It's $1.99 at Amazon for some reason.

HCSB Reading God's Story: A Chronological Daily Bible is $2.99.

NIV Study Bibles:

I was going to link all of these at Amazon as well, but Amazon's search algorithm seems to have changed when I wasn't looking. "NIV Bible" sorted by price now returns so many garbage hits that none of these are even in the first ten pages. I'm not hunting for them, but here's a link to the Kindle search page if you want to give Mobileread an affiliate cut.

NIV First-Century Study Bible: Explore Scripture in Its Jewish and Early Christian Context is $4.99. This one has replaced the Archaeological Study Bible as my favorite NIV study Bible. The regular price says $9.99, but I'm pretty sure it was $14.99 the last time I looked. Maybe HarperCollins is dropping prices some more.

I believe that if The Preacher had been writing Ecclesiastes today (Eccl. 12:12), he would have written, "my son, be warned: the writing* of many study Bibles is endless." (NASB)!

* literally, "making."

Thanks for compiling the list and posting it. There are at least a couple that I was not aware were marked down at the present time, and I may end up getting them.

I certainly can relate to that. ha

I wouldn't mind paying such a steep (ha) price for a study Bible, though, if I knew that there was a good amount of exclusive "helps"-type material in it. I'm afraid that I've probably bought, without knowing it, several study Bibles which have the identical material as in other study Bibles that I already had.

I've noticed that Zondervan in particular has gotten bad about recycling study notes in various study Bibles. I like the variety, but I'm torn between missing something new and getting a bunch of old stuff. I compromise by waiting until they're cheap.

Women's Evangelical Commentary (a Study Bible)--Now Only 99 Cents!

When I saw this study Bible advertised as being marked down to just 99 cents, my dentures just about fell out of my mouth and onto my floor. Just kidding, I don't wear dentures. But you get the point--I think that this is an amazing deal!

Two caveats (some would say, "drawbacks," "catches," or even "gotchas") . . . . I didn't see a place where this was noted, but I feel sure that the Bible text is the (HCS/HCSB) Holman Christian Standard, since Holman is the publisher of this study Bible and that's kinda how they've done things in similar situations in the past. Not a big deal, in my opinion, however, as from what little that I've been around it, the version seems to be of high quality (mainly meaning having accuracy and readability).

The other drawback concerns the fact that this volume covers only the Old Testament portion of the Bible. The study Bible seems to be complete for the Old and New Testaments--Amazon's got the New Testament portion, in the dead-tree, hardcover format. But, they appear not to have a digital version available for the New Testament. Perhaps that will come along before very long.

Kindle Women's Evangelical Commentary: Old Testament.
