It's probably 20 years since I read this, but as I recall, it's a very readable account of Operation Market Garden.

Crete: The Battle and the Resistance by Antony Beevor. 99p (was £6.99)

I've never read this one, but Antony Beevor is an excellent author, and I'd be interested to learn more about the battle of Crete, so it's going on my to-read list.
It looks like we Yanks are out of luck on both of those--well, all three if you count the audiobook.

Those of you who missed getting Lone Star: A History of Texas and the Texans by T. R. Fehrenbach, when it was marked down to $1.99 around September 21, might wish to know about the fact that the book is marked down again, albeit only to $3.99 this time.

I noticed that the book has been marked down to $1.99 about three times in the last year or so. So, if you're the gambling type, you might wish to take your chances that it will get marked down to $1.99 again. I'll try to let ya'll know if and when it does.

If you decide that the markdown this time is big enough, you can get the deal on this webpage.

A little factoid: I noticed that this book currently is the #1 Kindle seller in Historical Geography. So, I'm sure that it is a good one.

(For anyone outside the UK who gets a 'not available in your country' message when checking one of the above links try changing the number after the final hyphen in the URL, or even deleting the number and the final hyphen, to see if the book is available in your region. Just remember to double check that the result gives the same book as given in the links above.)
I didn't try changing the numbers, but I did try deleting the final hypen and number. I either still got a "not available in your country" or a price that was not marked down. But thanks for the tip--I wasn't aware of it! I'll try to file that away in my memory for next time.

Well, I guess you could say that these deals were "too far"--too far away--for those of us in the United States. ha

West Point 1915 by Michael E. Haskew for $CDN 2.99

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00OJ9UBYS

Product Description
West Point’s Class of 1915 is the academy’s most important in history.

The cadets of the United States Military Academy, West Point, are intimately twined with the country’s history. The graduating class of 1915, the class the stars fell on, was particularly noteworthy. Of the 164 graduates that year, 59 (36%) attained the rank of general, the most of any class in. Although Dwight Eisenhower and Omar Bradley, both five-star generals, are the most recognizable, other class members contributed significantly to the Allied victory in World War I, World War II and played key roles either in the post-war U.S. military establishment or in business and industry after World War II, especially in the Korean War and the formation of NATO. For more than half a century, these men exerted tremendous influence on the shaping of modern America, which remains substantial to this day. Individually, the stories of these military and political leaders are noteworthy. Collectively, they are astonishing. West Point, 1915 explores the achievements of this remarkable group.

Web Writing: Why And How For Liberal Arts Teaching And Learning, by
Jack Dougherty and Tennyson O’Donnell (editors) is free for today, at least, at unglue.it.

I haven't downloaded it myself, so I don't know what format the ebook is in. It looks like it is a University of Michigan Press imprint.

Here's the book description:
The essays in Web Writing respond to contemporary debates over the proper role of the Internet in higher education, steering a middle course between polarized attitudes that often dominate the conversation. The authors argue for the wise integration of web tools into what the liberal arts does best: writing across the curriculum. All academic disciplines value clear and compelling prose, whether that prose comes in the shape of a persuasive essay, scientific report, or creative expression. The act of writing visually demonstrates how we think in original and critical ways and in ways that are deeper than those that can be taught or assessed by a computer. Furthermore, learning to write well requires engaged readers who encourage and challenge us to revise our muddled first drafts and craft more distinctive and informed points of view. Indeed, a new generation of web-based tools for authoring, annotating, editing, and publishing can dramatically enrich the writing process, but doing so requires liberal arts educators to rethink why and how we teach this skill, and to question those who blindly call for embracing or rejecting technology.

Sound good? Well, then, here's the direct link to the freebie. Not interested? Well, there's a bunch more free ebooks that you can access through unglue.it, from the same webpage.

Ten Days in a Mad-House by Nellie Bly

Around the World in Seventy-Two Days by Nellie Bly

Nellie Bly was the pen name of Elizabeth Jane Cochrane, an American journalist. Bly was a famous reporter and a pioneer of investigative journalism. She wrote a popular memoir on her experience in taking a trip around the world in 1889 and 1890 and as part of an undercover assignment in 1887, Bly pretended to be insane and spent ten days in an asylum in order to observe the conditions the inhabitants had to endure.

The U.S. link didn't work for me. Here's a link to all of the publisher's Kindle books, sorted by price low to high.

Thanks for letting us know about the new publisher. As much as this kind of publisher proliferates, it must be a pretty lucrative business model, despite the fact that most (all?) of the books sell for 99 cents or less!

The books produced are so similar that I think someone is selling a kit or a franchise. The only NON weird-greekie-name is Waxkeep (so far).

The links work for me so the syntax must be OK - do you see freebies using your link ?

I agree. Or maybe it is all just one or two companies, operating under different names. Kind of like General Motors, in the U.S., operating under Chevrolet, Buick (I think they're still around), GMC, Pontiac & Oldsmobile (until a few years ago) . . . .

Yes, at the very beginning, since it was a sort by low to high price.

Cool. Not the annoying commercial, but the brand. ha Of all of the GM models still remaining, at least, Buick is my fave. I've never owned one, though. But I'm a Ford/Mazda & Toyota man.

I've got a solution to the annoying commercials--read more ebooks. ha

A gold 1980 something Buick was big enough to sleep comfortably in.
