I get those messages when I download a MOBI into my Fire Phone. Or an AZW3 into my K3

You think Amazon ebooks would download from the cloud in the proper format. No clue what I would do IF I hadn't finally learned to remove the DRM...lose 1/2 of my ebooks I purchased.
Yes I know they are Suppose to work on ALL Amazon Devices. But they don't. All Amazon says is they will check with the publishers. Called pass the buck!

On the redownload, if you are not on the device it was sent to, you have to download to the specific device.
Oh little tip,
If you can't find a book you know you own, use the contact us at Amazon. Have them call you. They can push the book to your new device.
I have had to do that twice.

Best to download and back up all your books. Amazon is introducing a new format called kfx that cannot be converted. At the moment it only exists on the newer devices, and not for all books, but they may roll it out for older platforms and for PC, which means it could prove to be the only format you can get your books in.

There is no need to start a panic like that. If you back up your books already, then continue to do so. If you didn't see the need to back them up before, now with a new format is no different than before - don't need to start. If you have to have books you can convert to other formats, then you will simply have to buy elsewhere. If you are such person, you will find out somewhere (e.g. here on MR) that Amazon went that route. They didn't go that route so far.

The books are hard coded at the point of download, either directly from the cloud onto your kindle or if you download via Amazzon's manage your content and devices page, where you have to select the specific kindle you are downloading the book for. The only way you can read the same book on all your devices is to download it via the Amazon Cloud directly to each device, which is what Amazon expect you to do. If the book is not in your cloud you should locate the order on your account and then ring Amazon customer services and ask them where it is.

The day I find one of those books is the last day I buy a book from Amazon.

These Companies just have too much power!

I buy ebooks, music, movies and audiobooks. The Music is all DRM free these days. I strip out the DRM for the movies, ebooks and audiobooks. Sometimes in life, you simply have to be proactive. Companies aren't really evil, but they are going to do what's in their best interest. Companies go belly up, or decide to change business strategies.

I recommend backing up now. Otherwise you will only be able to read them on a Kindle.

Only if you download from the cloud directly to your Kindle. If you download from your Manage Your Kindle page to your computer, then it comes down in .azw3 format.

Please stop spreading FUD.

KFX is not an issue. Trust me on this. What you do is go to your Amazon account and use the USB download option to download a KF8 version that you can load into your Calibre library and also strip the DRM.

Well Mr Wolf, I'm sure you're okay but I'll not trust anybody with my books. I have most of the 6700 converted now and will back them up to my mirrored backup drives before I go to bead and likely put them on my USB backup tomorrow. Nothin much else to do anyway. What is being said is similar to what I've found. Many of the books I bought in 2012 and 2013 are gone from the cloud. Note this was after they went to the AZW3 format. They may do better with the new format overwriting the cloud but I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped at some date and said screw to earlier purchases.

that's what I normally do as soon as I buy a book. As long as that doesn't change I'll be happy.

I don't understand How to Do the Audibles or Movies

I did learn how to do the ebooks

Some one gave a link in another thread about the Audibles but didn't work for me. Im just not techy.

Hers something I been thinking of.... tell me it it would work or not. Buying one of the $49 Fires getting 124 gig micro SD card & downloading & storing Everything on it for backup. BUT IF my account at Amazon ever got closed Would & still be able to play whats downloaded on it? Or does closing account mean they block the Fire also?

It's fairly simple, there are programs out there that do the job. No technical expertise required.
