I think they stay in your account, but will vanish from the website for future purchasers. But if you want to maintain access to it, I'd make sure it's backed up in Calibre with the DRM stripped to be safe. (Although I do that for everything myself.)

As I recall, Amazon would remove the book from your library and refund your money. There was a big brouhaha over that back in the early years of Kindle. They may have changed that since then, but if I were Amazon, I'd do the same.

After the big deal with 1984 they said they wouldn't remove a book from peoples libraries.

Good news! At least for those in the UK and the Commonwealth. Here is a list of the eBooks available from Transworld (Mum’s UK publisher).

{...} At the risk of being a broken record, do you have any information on the electronic version of the Harper Hall Trilogy being published in the US?
Andra

I know!

A lot of people have asked this question (including me).

The best I can say is it’s a contract problem and has been taking far too long to get resolved.

The Harper Hall trilogy was first published back in the 70s, way before anyone (except perhaps Isaac Asimov) thought of eBooks.

Fingers crossed!

They get removed from sale to others (and often their earnings confiscated; sadly, Amazon can only seize back a couple of months).

You can keep them. No refund.

Or, you can ask for a credit and have them removed.

Which of those two is up to you.

That was the post I recalled. I thought Transworld had them for the US, also, but apparently that one series ended up with the US rights in dispute (which can happen with publishers that are claiming rights on old contracts or when the contracts were vague).

Perhaps they'll get it straightened out in his lifetime.

I know being from a trad pub is not necessarily an indication of the eBook's proofreading quality, but according to a comment from Shayera on a post at Dear Author these are pretty bad...

DRM-Free should have been a big red flag. Transworld would never have published DRM-Free. Second red flag should have been that it is in the KLL. That would never have happened.

I don't see how I would know whether a book has DRM (I just switched to a Kindle recently), even looking at one that I'm sure does not (a Baen book). And to be honest, I wouldn't check regardless - every book I buy gets added to Calibre with a little help from Alf. And I wouldn't pretend to know the stance of every author/publisher/rights holder on the Lending Library.

I'm all for sticking with non-pirated books (and I'll avoid these now that I know they're pirated)....but isn't the due diligence really the responsibility of the seller and rights holder? If I were Todd McCaffrey and I was receiving some (probably pretty decent) income from these books, I think I'd spend an hour a month or so checking the major stores for pirated copies. It's not worth checking the torrents - it'd be too time consuming. But Amazon customers are spending money, and it's not reasonable to expect the average consumer to be able to identify a pirated copy.

(Maybe it would be useful to have a 'books we know are pirated' thread?)

Look at the "Usage limit" line of the book's information. If it says "Unlimited", the book has no DRM.

Instead there may be a no-DRM note in the Product Description (Tor and Baen).

Someone claimed on this board that though the default Simultaneous Device Usage: was 6 the publisher could set it to a value indicating Unlimited.

If so there may be a handful which show as Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited but have DRM.
