I have given this book three stars because it does have a lot of interesting recipes - but to say that it is by 'Isabella Beeton' is blatantly not true and a huge insult to both history and the reader. It is a fairly good collection of recipes, that is all. Some are derived from Mrs Beeton, a lot are not. There are a few text-box hints from Mrs Beeton, amongst others, no explanation of oven temps (fan or not?) - or overall introduction. At a glance, the recipes (which are given in grams and ounces) are good, clear and easy to follow. It's probably worth having for the recipes, if you can ignore the false premise on which it is being marketed! == To back this up, Pavlova was invented in 1926 in New Zealand There is no trace of a Pineapple cake or an upside-down cake in _Household Management_ Need be no deliberate untruths here "Mrs Beeton" has been used as a name for compilations ever since her death. |

On the topic of copying recipes, I was surprised yesterday. I looked at the 4 fundraiser cookbooks I grabbed yesterday and there was not a single duplicate in appetizers, beverages or salads.

Speaking of Mrs. Beeton's name being used as sort of an ananym (pretend name for the real author (that's putting it kindly)) . . . . we have a prominent brand of cookbooks, food, and maybe other things in the U.S. called "Betty Crocker." The difference between "her" and Mrs. Beeton is the fact that Mrs. Beeton was a real person (if I can believe what I read. ha), but there never was a real Betty Crocker. It is a made up brand name (Wikipedia). This brings up a question. I wonder if she really wrote the needlework and household management books that Cinaisajoy spoke of? Or any of the others? Assuming that what you and Froid found are truthful, "Mrs Beeton's" books are only a notch above, in my mind, the cut-and-paste (copying from the Internet and creating a book) ebooks that we have spoken of and discussed on this thread. Maybe the Mrs Beeton books long ago were inspiration to the people who do those things today! ha But just think: Mrs. Beeton died at age 28. Just imagine what more she could have written if she had lived a normal lifespan! I tell you, the world is a poorer place because she didn't! ![]() |

The difference is Betty Crocker was created to support one manufacturer. On Mrs. Beeton, the recipes do sound good and the ones I looked at were basic recipes. Not much you can do with them. |

Meat Cookery: How Americans Cooked Meat in the 1800s by Angela A. Johnson
This book is about cooking domestic meats in the 1800s; beef and veal, mutton and lamb, pork, and poultry (chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys). Early American settlers used only a wood burning stove or open hearth fireplace to cook their meals. With no thermometers, cooks determined how hot their ovens were by how long they could safely hold their hand inside. For meat on a spit or cooked in pots, it was just "cook until done." http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0153UO33Q/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0153UO33Q/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0153UO33Q/ |

Please, oh please! Don't tell me that there's not a real Aunt Barb or that she didn't really write this cookbook! I can't stand the agony of being deceived again, like I was about Mrs Beeton. I can't. I can't!
