I don't use my Kindles anymore since buying the Kobo H20, but I figured I'd download the new software because, well, why not. I mainly wanted to see the Bookerly font. It looks so light and thin to me. I'd get eyestrain using it, I'm sure. I don't know if it's because I'm so used to my Kobo, but the Kindle fonts look so bad to me now. I imagine it looks better on the Voyage, but on my Paperwhite it's really thin and washed out.

You are aware what the KFX format and Amazon's policy mean, aren't you?
Not only do they want to control book formats and distribution (even for classics, DRM-free books) it also helps to analyse buyers' behaviour. I am really surprised that you seem to happily jump on the bandwagon. Especially considering how Amazon is introducing it. Quote:

I believe that if the kfx ever comes to the kindle for pc then you will see calibre being able to store them correctly, and elf will come up with the drm tools.
But for me I just love to read, and I love my amazon ebook library. And I do use calibre, and I send all of my ebooks to kindle for pc. So I can have a saved copy. |

I never said needing a new format for the enhanced typesetting is a bug. I have said it's a rather stupid move by Amazon when it's not needed at all and if it was done properly, all KF8 eBooks could have had the use of the advanced typesetting.

It looks like Amazon is doing things properly using kerning and ligature information in the font, since different fonts seem to have different kerning and ligatures. |

A new file format to introduce these (not so) new typographical features is totally unnecessary. The purpose of introducing the new file format is to encode books and to increase drm. i.e. more Amazon shutdown. It remains to be seen how effective it will be in that regard, but for now it appears to be working well, but it's early days. |

KFX is not about DRM. KFX is about not being able to decompile and remove DRM. We do see that RMDSK (ADE) can do advanced typesetting on the fly where Amazon feels the need to create a completely new format.

So can drm be removed, and can the file be converted into other formats?

However, I do like the Bookerly font. It looks amazing on high resolution LCD screens even though it just looks OK on even the new Voyage and Paperwhite 300ppi screens, IMO. Shrug. These are the games we play, I suppose. |

I really like bookerly on my PW3, it is thinner and lighter than other fonts but it is also very nice to read.

Nope. Nobody outside of Amazon knows enough about the KFX file format and the DRM. So for now the best we can do is KF8. But if you have a Kindle that supports enhanced typesetting and you've download an eBook from Amazon that has ET, then you have to get the eBook by downloading via the web browser or K4PC.

So drm cannot be removed from kfx and it cannot be converted. As such, kfx appears to be more a system for Amazon to increase control than it is an introduction of new features.

Cannot be removed yet, just as it couldn't be removed from books with Adobe DRM a few years ago. The tools for doing this don't spring fully-formed from the brow of Zeus, they take time to develop.
