3.17 added a program called sickel that rebooted the machine if it detected the reader had frozen. Some people felt the timeout was a little short and certain malformed files could trigger it

sickel is something that was added in 3.16.10. It forces your Kobo ereader to reboot if the device becomes unresponsive. There were reports of users having problems with sickel being too sensitive and rebooting endlessly. Some of those issues were resolved in 3.17.0 but not all. So Kobo stopped releasing 3.17.0 and has now put out 3.17.3 which may have finally resolved those issues.

it seems the sickel timout was raised considerably

edit: seems it was disabled instead, it still runs but all you get is a log message Code:
Aug 19 20:37:46 sickel: void SickelService::reboot() something is taking too long and I want to reboot! Last edited by frostschutz; 08-19-2015 at 05:38 PM. |

Thanks for the explanations Desdinova and MGlitch, I've understood

Two questions but the first is the main : 1. I can imagine Sickle consumes battery if this "function" is always checking the tasks???? 2. If I take 3 minutes to read a page, can Sickle think that the page has frozen? => I imagine that Sickle is like "nagios" : only some tasks are checked, so this "freeze" is not detected and it's the reason why there is no reboot... The first post of the Direct Links to Kobo Firmware has been updated to include 3.17.3.

This release is currently unnamed. It's still too early in the morning, but I've already used that as a release name. And I wouldn't want to be repetititive. |

sickel is just ensuring that the nickel process is still alive and sending heartbeats to it; it makes no difference how long you take to read a page nickel will still be sending it's heartbeats.

Someone else asked this, though I don't remember where on the forum the post was. The answer is essentially that it consumes next to no power. Likely not enough to make a measurable difference in the battery life. The answer was more detailed but I don't recall the specifics of it. |

I want to change my Glo... I don't know if I will take a H20 or a Glo HD. On the Glo NON HD we can replace the main card that is a SD by a bigger. Is it possible to do the same on Glo HD?

				Old school

Hello fellow kobo users, call me old school but i inherited a kobo original wifi N647 and it had been updated to what seems a bad firmware (1.9.12) judging by the posts here. Interestingly, my kobo works (i can read books) but wifi wont work (connects to network successfully, but cant go on store). Also i cant connect to mac via desktop kobo app...

Basically, im asking for the original firmware for N647 to try and downgrade back BTW will usb partitionning mode work for that? or do i have to do something else? (do i just put the file in the created partition?) Thanks a bunch, Bao |

It will reboot and installing the older firmware by itself. You don't need to (re) partition it. This works for downgrade and upgrade the same. Thats how it works in the newer devices, I don't know for the N647 and which firmware file you need as I don't see that model in the firmware list. If you want to flash an image, then you would need a img flashing program for it. More information you can find here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=231935 There you can ask for an image too, I am almost sure that davidfor will have it. I had some serious trouble upgrading my H2O from 3.15 to 3.17. It performed the upgrade, then crashed so hard the screen colors were inverted and I had to do a full reset.

Luckily, I had a recent backup on hand, so I was able to upgrade the bare device, restore the backup, add the couple of books I'd put on there since the backup, and get up and running as if nothing had happened. Lost a couple of hours off of my time-read stats, but that's no big deal. All the same, I think I'm going to do a full backup before upgrading to 3.17.3... |
