Topical post on The Passive Voice.

http://www.thepassivevoice.com/08/20...re-title-2015/

It mostly speaks for itself, but one relevant excerpt from John Scalzi is this:

At this time, and I expect still for a while to come, the best way to address all these markets effectively and consistently is to partner with publishers.

Also, look at the figures for Audiobooks!

Many publishers line up interviews on radio talk shows. That's marketing. The bigger authors get the bigger stage, spots on afternoon TV talk shows and the like. I ran across an interview of David McCullough right after the Wright Brothers biography came out on the Stuff You Missed in History Class podcast, that's marketing (effective too, I bought the book because of it). I've seen a number of political authors on various Sunday morning political shows. That's marketing.

Most get some form of marketing, though obviously, how much marketing and what form can vary quite a bit. Tor puts out a weekly email newsletter to anyone who signs up. So all their authors get marketing. Some new authors who haven't sold a book get pretty big marketing if the publisher thinks that it's a potential best seller. I remember when the first Wheel of Time book came out to a pretty big marketing campaign.

Of course, a secondary point is how does an indie get even the lowest level of marketing, i.e. book signing tour and book placement? Answer, for the most part, they can't. They just don't have the contacts to put it together, nor do they have the up front cash to pay for book placement. Book placement (and good cover art) can make a big difference in book sales.
First off Tor is not one of the big 5.
My question was how many books does the Random Penguin put out a year? How many of those actually get marketed? Just putting books in a B&M store is not promoting.
Did you know that I can get any author that has a print book out at Barnes and Noble? Now yes I may have to special order but if they get enough orders they will stock the book.

By the way, I can tell you for a fact that not all brick and mortar stores stock all new releases even a big name author that is traditionally published. I know this because I was looking for a very specific new release.

Now please answer my question. I want to know how many books Random puts out a year. I know only a very select few actually get promoted not just thrown on a shelf.
Let's see in the last couple of years, what maybe a dozen?

Not in and of themselves, but they are an imprint of a big five publisher (Macmillan). Just like Ace is an imprint of the Randy Penguin.

Tor is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Macmillan which is in turn owned by Holtzbrinck of Stuttgart Germany:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geor...blishing_Group

TOR.COM is an entirely separate MacMillan operation that (supposedly) has nothing to do with Tor.

As for the Randy Penguin, the last I heard they were publishing 17,000 titles in 2014.
Which is about half the output of the 5 BPHs.
The total US output in 2013 was well over 300,000K

Ask Random House. Are you seriously claiming that Random House has only marketed a dozen books over the last couple of years? I think you are letting your Internet Hyperbole Drive (IHD) get away from you.

Nice link, thanks!

Wow, roughly half of his sales are audiobooks? Fascinating, I would never have expect that. I've actually got both the audiobook and the ebook. Some of that might be having Wil Wheaton as the narrator. Great to have real data to look at rather than wild internet assertions and speculation. It's not unusual for me to buy both the ebook and audiobook formats of books that I like. Perhaps I missed it, but it would be interesting to know what the foreign sales figures are. It might be too early for Lock In. I'll have to think about all this.

As for Hugh Howey, first can't say that I've ever heard of him, but glad to hear that he thinks he's as big name author as John Scalzi.

I also note that Scalzi didn't say a word about how much money he made, just how many books he sold as ebooks, hardbacks and audiobooks. Howey simply asserted that he was making 4x what Scalzi makes based on the fact that he's put out twice the number of books that Scalzi did during the same time period. It's impossible to say what Scalzi actually made without knowing what his contracts were.

A dozen? With 250 imprints promoting titles at various levels I'm sure it was more than that.

PRH puts out more than 15,000 titles a year.

A simply google of "book tour name" substituting the name of the author for name for the various PRH authors shows how many are going on book tours. Pretty much every one who isn't dead on the first two pages regardless of genre. I gave up after that since I was way past 12.

Thank you. What I was thinking is I have not seen, heard or read anything about more than a dozen new books coming out in the last two years. So what exactly are the publishers doing to promote?
There are less than 2 dozen on the new release tables.
So without actually following an author, how would someone know that Jack Canfield, Clive Cussler or anyone else put out a novel?
Am I supposed to walk in 100 degree heat to see who is newly out at the book store?
What if someone doesn't have an email address so can't receive newsletters?
How does someone not near a big city, learn about all the new traditional published books?

So now someone please tell me exactly how many not best selling authors are promoted to the general public?

How many authors have you seen mentioned on television or radio in the last year?
Not counting Harper Lee as she has been everywhere.
