nextPVR found my HD stick. It did not find any of the 132 HD channels ithe stick found on my laptop (W7)

Yes I set up the TV Guide (The XML has local channels)

There is only one Windows installer for both Home and Pro versions. One ISO.

As AnotherCat said, there are special disks for special editions, e.g. the EU/Korea/Chinese crackers editions, where it is legally problematic to distribute certain components on the ISO.

Home/Pro is unlocked at install time. Multiple ISOs is a waste of electrons.

When I installed Pro on my SP3, I burned a USB drive to use on my wife's HP laptop which had 8.1 home on it. When I tried to install from that The install asked me for a key, which of course was the key for home, and refused to install.

So I went back to the MCT and re-downloaded home. It installed just fine w/o asking for the key.

MS does not offer a Pro or a Home ISO. I haven' attempted to create an ISO using MCT, but it seems unlikely that they would create a whole new ISO for the MCT.

Possible when you use MCT it preconfigures the installer to look for version-specific keys? What a total waste of time.

If I understand you correctly, you tried to upgrade your wife's notebook from 8.1 using the iso on DVD/USB drive obtained using the Media Creation Tool?

If so, where did you get the key for Windows 10 Home that you say you entered.

My understanding is that to use an iso on media (whether purchased or downloaded using the Media Creation Tool, or directly from Microsoft downloads) the target PC has to have been updated by the free offer process online, or by using the direct installation process of the Media Creation Tool first, or by purchasing a key (a purchased key does not have to be for the same version of Windows 7/8/10 that was previously on the PC).

I do not know why it is like that but I assume that one reason is that the iso on media that one may burn now using the Tool, will still be in your possession after the 1 years free upgrade offer ends.

Not at all. A USB stick or DVD burned with the media creation tool will work fine for upgrading a PC instead of doing the direct download (via Win update or the Media tool). It's one of the reasons they offered it as an option so if you're upgrading multiple PC's you don't have to do the download a bunch of times.

But you do have to have the right version, home or pro to match the version on the machine to upgrade.

Maybe more like 64bit or 32bit.

For the install tool methinks it looks at what flavor of windows you have and turns it on. If I recall most all windows iso's have all the features in them. But you need a key to enable them in a upgrade. Then the appropriate downloads will bring things up to date on your system.

Now clean installs I think you do need the appropriate version for your machines hardware, ether 64bit or 32bit. But to do that you do need to load the offered free upgrade download and install it, and I suspect that is when a picture of your systems DNA and what flavor of windows that is installed and is then taken and uploaded and stored on their servers. In a way every computer is unique in its hardware and mac addresses.

Think that done so users can not make an end run and upgrade beyond what their original license gave them.

You have to choose version of the tool 32 or 64, then you have to choose the windows version Home, Pro (you can't choose both) and then the architecture where you can choose 32, 64 or both.

Admittedly I didn't try to install Pro on Home or vice verse because I didn't want to risk screwing up my upgrade, but I have one of each. And separate USB (and DVDs) I created for each -- Home and Pro.

That is correct and is in fact how all our machines here have been upgraded (8.1 Pro machines with 10 Pro MCT media) but the question is (as ESchwartz has alluded to) will Pro media, for example, created using the Media Creation Tool allow, for example, an upgrade of a Home machine. This is what Wodin was endeavouring to do and is what I was responding to.

What Kennyc has just said is what I believe to be true though and so the media was likely Wodin's problem and what I said is probably correct.

My understanding at day one of release, so it may have been subsequently changed, was:
- Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Windows 8.0 Core, Windows 8.1 Core one must create Windows 10 Home media with MCT
- Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.0 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro one must create Windows 10 Pro media with MCT.

The fact that Wodin was asked for a key when trying to update the Home machine bears out that this restriction likely still applies (when, generally, an activation key will be asked for only if the target machine's Windows 7/8 has not been activated and one assumes Wodin's wife's machine was activated).

Also, in my experience (with Pro only) the media created by the MCT for a specific edition is much smaller than the full Windows 10 iso.

Maybe someone else who has tried updating a Windows 7/8 Home PC to 10 Home with MCT created Pro media can comment. I suspect if it is going to work at all (unlikely?), one will need a Windows 10 key.

I can confirm that upgrading a Home system with the MCT Pro ISO won't work.

I still can't figure out why the MCT (not ISO) gave me Pro on my laptop when it had been 8.1 "Home"/Basic. Not that I'm complaining.

Was it an upgraded laptop from 7 to 8? Or OEM 8.1?
