Unless it totally fails -- i.e. completely unresponsive, the rollback is simple (I just did it on my laptop) but does take some time.....a couple of hours to rollback and reinstall W10, just rolling back probably half-an hour to an hour... The install will likely search for updated drivers and install them. Good Luck! Last edited by kennyc; 08-07-2015 at 03:10 PM. |

Are you doing it from media you created (DVD or USB) or relying on the automatic download/update? If not from media I would suggest going that way. Use the Win 10 Media Creation Tool to make a DVD or USB and install using that. P.S. glad you were able to get back to Win7. |

And therefore you should set it to metered, because in the end it amounts to much the same thing: you don't want the system to download -- or upload -- large amounts of data without your explicit say-so.

OK, so I had a few problems with this update. I did not use the Media Creation Tool to force the update, but waited for it to download and updated when prompted.
I noticed two things: there was no Windows Welcome tone when booting up, and my num lock key on the keypad was off. MS released a patch on Wed evening (8/5) and I had a hard time shutting down. I did see a notification that an update was being downloaded, but no notice to leave the system up (so much for the automatic updates. . .). The same was true for shut down on 8/6, and I used the physical power button to shut down. Earlier in the week (7/31, 8/1), HP laptop users (yes I have one) were reporting that they were having problems shutting down, or waking up from sleep mode. MS Community was recommending disabling the fast start up option in Power options. This worked for some but not others. This morning I disabled Fast Start up, and rebooted. On shut down, the 8/5 patch was fully downloaded and applied (with a warning to leave the system on), and then on boot up it was configured (with a warning to leave the system on). The Windows "Welcome tone" is now back and my num lock key is automatically turned on. Don't know what else is in this patch, but it has at least solved two problems. Disabling Fast Start up does result in a clean shut down, but start up is a long process as everything needs to load before the user has control of the computer. I think I'll leave it this way until the major upgrade in October. - Rita |

You (Microsoft) want me to take part in a voluntary distributed update network? Cool! I'm in. Here's how much of my precious resource I'm willing to donate to the cause at any given time. The lamest of bittorent clients gives me this ability. The current choices of "None" or "Some" lack a certain clarity. I'd appeciate a little more granularity on the "Some." Otherwise, you get None. *shrug* Besides that, I'm liking what I see so far. |

There was an error message (0xC1900101 - 0x4000D SECOND_BOOT phase blah blah blah MIGRATE_DATA operation). I left it in the hung position for at least a couple of hours before a hard power-off of the system and a reboot. And yes, lucky I could roll back. Various searches on the error message suggest it might be a driver issue, or a number of other things, with mostly general advice rather than specific to this error. The one thing I haven't tried is updating my BIOS (mostly 'cos I'm not that sure how to do it but can prolly work it out) so I might give that a go tomorrow. One piece of advice said the following: Press Windows key + X Click Command Prompt (Admin) Type the following command: rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN Hit Enter on your keyboard Exit command prompt Restart However, the command in bold above does not run, and I don't know enough about command line syntax to work out what is wrong. I tried removing the comma, but that didn't work, so I've given up on that one. Last edited by orlok; 08-07-2015 at 04:47 PM. |

Diap,
Well, I am not a fan of Live Tiles anyway, and I assumed the rest would work once you open an app. But I read that you can't set wired internet to metered anyway. I see what you mean, however. Thanks for explaining. |

Hmmm, I'm always a bit skittish at running those command line things as well.... I'm not sure what to suggest at this point. One thing....I'm not sure what you mean by you ran it using MagicDisc. You shouldn't need anything to run the 'setup.exe' file from the DVD. Last edited by kennyc; 08-07-2015 at 05:03 PM. |

@eschwartz: No prob.
But even on a wireless laptop, I'd like something other than a Metered Connection solution. When it comes to sharing Windows updates with the rest of the internet, I don't want to have to impose an OS level, potentially app-wide restriction to limit it. I want an "updates shared with the internet" level of control. ![]() |

Mine works okay except with Cortana I get Code instead of search results most of the time. I'm finding the drivers in restart take forever to load. I hope they fix that. Windows 8.1 was much faster in starting up. |
