Oh and I almost left out gadgets.

Yes, I know you can add them in, but they are not part of Windows 8.

kennyc thanks, I get that one can stop it from ever installing, or go back within the first month. I can certainly get the first download at a free wifi.

My problem is after I have installed it, but don't want the future updates to automatically install. Do you know how to do that?

You can get Windows 10 now by using the Windows 10 Download Tool.

You need the Pro version to be able to stop automatic updates. But my guess is that someone will hack a way to stop the automatic updates.

2 headed theme

Would someone running W10 pro on a 2 head rig try a (slideshow) theme
(Official MS downloaded theme. 2 tried)

What I am seeingon changing to a new theme):
1st (in sequence) slide on Monitor 2 (extended)
2nd slide on Main

Monitor 2 never changes slide
Main monitor changes (waiting for the sequence to repeat, to see if slide 1 ever shows there)

W7 showed the same slide (in sequence) on both monitors.

From the settings page for Windows Update:
Quote:
Updates won't download over a metered connection (where charges may apply).
When I look to see how Microsoft defines "metered connection", I find this:
Quote:
What's a metered connection?

A metered connection is an Internet connection that has a data limit associated with it. Cellular data connections are set as metered by default. Wi-Fi network connections can be set to metered, but aren't by default. Some apps and features in Windows will behave differently on a metered connection to help reduce your data usage.
To set a Wi-Fi network connection as metered:
1.Select Start > Settings > Network & Internet.
2.Select Wi-Fi > Advanced options > Set as metered connection.

Update on my 2 headed theme:

It is looking like Monitor 1 runs a loop
when it reaches the tail, monitor 2 changes [n to 1]

(Monitor 1 also held onto the picture it had, when Monitor 2 finally changes. Monitor 1 keeps the fast loop )

Of course Win 8 had a start screen. Just because it occupied an entire screen instead of a small portion of it doesn't not make it the same thing. It had all the features of the Win 7 start menu. What was it missing? What is it that one could accomplish with the start menu that they couldn't accomplish with the start screen?

Gadgets are not a deal breaker. That's like claiming that the KePub renderer on the kobo is significantly superior to the ePub renderer since the former allows for a graphical representation of chapters. Does that make the kePub renderer the Win 10/Win 7 to the ePub renderer's Win 8 then? At least one could (I assume) add gadgets to Win 8 from other sources. One can't add chapter graphs to the ePub renderer.

For those who can't stand the bright white title bars on windows with Win 10, there's a method to colour them according to your tastes again. I don't know what MS were thinking making those plain white.

I had an old Windows 7 netbook I had upgraded to 8 and now 10 but I had to downgrade back to 8 because of a problem with the video. I use the machine as a media/Netflix player on my TV and it was only in black and white for some crazy reason. Anyway, the point here is the downgrade only took about 10 minutes (impressive for such a slow machine!) and then after a reboot, Windows 8 was back and functioning perfectly as if I had never done the upgrade (including the annoying notice to upgrade again!). So, in case any are worried, at least in my case the downgrade worked perfectly.

There's also a dark theme that I think looks quite attractive. You can set both Windows and Edge to use it (separately).

Also, a word of caution for those that rely on OneDrive storage.

The OneDrive client on Win 10 breaks a feature that many people rely on - local place-holders for online-only files.

Previously one could mark selected files and folders as online-only, which would remove those files from local storage (freeing up room on your local storage), leave them stored on the cloud, and also leave place-holders on the PC so you could locally browse the entire contents of your OneDrive. Win 10 breaks that simple functionality I hope they bring it back soon.

http://www.zdnet.com/article/testers...onedrive-sync/

This is an old article from 2014, but I can confirm that the issue still persists.
