Windows 10 - free upgrade to those with PC using Windows 7 or 8

Whatever you end up with, don't forget the option to use a microSD card (assuming you get a device capable of using one) to expand your memory. It's worked seamlessly with any of the Windows tabs I've had (Acer and Surface).

I did the group policy & it didn't work; probably a bug in win10. Will try the reg method after dinner.

edit: yup, the direct/indirect reg edit works; just download the reg patch, double-click, yes to run & the lock screen is gone. boot direct to logon screen.

Thank you. I did see some stuff for editing the registry, but didn't want to go there unless there was no other way.

The future is bright

Looking back at Windows 8, it’s easy to see where Microsoft went wrong. It was a giant bet on touch-based computing, but it made using a PC with a keyboard and mouse awkward, frustrating, and outright confusing. In our original review, I wrote that there was a “risk of alienating users and creating another Vista-like perception catastrophe” due to the sweeping changes.

That’s exactly what happened: developers didn’t flock toward Windows 8, and regular users did their very best to avoid it. While the tablet interface was a great experience, the rest annoyed everybody who just wanted a laptop that worked the way they were used to. Microsoft is trying to fix all that with Windows 10.

Windows has a cycle. Windows XP saved us from Windows ME, Windows 7 saved us from the Windows Vista mess, now Windows 10 is here to save save us from Windows 8.

It’s nice to be on the good part of the cycle.

if Windows 10 weren't a free upgrade, I would.

The funniest thing is that there's very little difference between 8.1 and 10. I'm getting a kick out of people who hated Win 8/8.1 now praising Win 10 to the skies

I've run into a Win 10 problem. Apps (calculator, photos, ...) are Not working on one of the user accounts. This is on a win 10 pro upgrade from win 7. I tried a couple of powershell suggested fixes and they didn't help. I'm going to try MS live chat when I can get some time on the machine.

I would like to get the upgrade for my notebook computer. However, as far as I can tell, updates are automatic - I am usually traveling on a limited data plan - I see big $$ when an unanticipated update automatically downloads and eats my data plan. Am I wrong - has someone discovered a way to delay the updates (until I can get to a free wifi location)? That's also stopping me from getting a Windows tablet. If someone has covered that in this (or another) thread, please point me in that direction.

To stop it you have to uninstall the download/upgrade:

You can use the windows Media Creation Tool to download and create installation media (DVD or USB drive) when you prefer and then use that to do the install when you want.

Also for those that might want to revert...you can....not sure how well it works as I've not tried it but you can roll it back.
