Hvve to wait for payday to buy any more books, though.

This month, Phoenix Pick's free book of the month is The Best of Hal Clement by Hal Clement, edited by Lester del Rey.

Quote:
Hal Clement, one of the all-time greats of science fiction, was defining hard science fiction before such distinctions were even being thought of. He once described his approach to writing: “[T]he rules must be quite simple. They are; for the reader of a science-fiction story, they consist of finding as many as possible of the author’s statements or implications which conflict with the facts as science currently understands them. For the author, the rule is to make as few such slips as he possibly can.”

He was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1999 and an annual award for Excellence in Children’s Science Fiction has been established in his memory and is presented each year at the annual Worldcon.

This collection presents some of his finest shorter pieces as collected by his friend and colleague, Lester del Rey.
Additionally there is one other deal, which includes the above book as well as two additional books. This is available for a minimum price of $5.99 (Suggested price: $8.00). The additional books are:

The Best of L. Sprague de Camp
Spoiler:
Quote:
A science fiction collection by one of the all-time greats of science fiction, L. Sprague de Camp. These stories and poems exemplify de Camp’s unique outlook on life and mankind and are told with a quiet but sharp irony that became his trademark. Bold, inventive and humorous, this collection is a must for fans of the writer.

“Triumphant collection from SF's best-educated humanist.”—The Washington Post

“De Camp’s clever fusion of the droll and the sober is evident throughout.” —Booklist

The Best of Edmond Hamilton
Spoiler:
Quote:
Here is a collection of some of the finest short fiction penned by one of "fathers" of modern science fiction.

These stories were selected (and edited) by his wife Leigh Brackett, an author and a screenwriter. Her screen-writing credits include work on such films as The Big Sleep, Rio Bravo, The Long Goodbye and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

This collection spans nearly half a century of Edmond Hamilton's work and was selected from a repository of hundreds of stories that he had written over that period.

Both deals are available at the same link, linked at the top of the post.

Alan Dean Foster's For Love of Mother Not is $.99 (from $6.99) at Kobo and Amazon.

This is book 1 of the Flinx and Pip series and was one of my favorite dog-eared paperbacks when I was younger. I haven't read it in twenty-five years or so, though, so I guess I'll have to read it again to see how much my tastes have changed.

Edit: Also at Barnes & Noble now, which is apparently a little slow on the uptake.

The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu is $1.99 (down from $27.99) at Amazon US

Quote:
Book Description:
Two men rebel together against tyranny—and then become rivals—in this first sweeping book of an epic fantasy series from Ken Liu, recipient of Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards.

Wily, charming Kuni Garu, a bandit, and stern, fearless Mata Zyndu, the son of a deposed duke, seem like polar opposites. Yet, in the uprising against the emperor, the two quickly become the best of friends after a series of adventures fighting against vast conscripted armies, silk-draped airships, and shapeshifting gods. Once the emperor has been overthrown, however, they each find themselves the leader of separate factions—two sides with very different ideas about how the world should be run and the meaning of justice.

Fans of intrigue, intimate plots, and action will find a new series to embrace in the Dandelion Dynasty.

X-links to the DRM-free megathread where there's 2 recent items of SFnal interest:

The Women in Science Fiction Bundle offered by StoryBundle contains quite a number of well-established authors including backlist novels from Nebula winners Nancy Kress, Vonda N. McIntyre, and Linda Nagata, as well as popular Baen and ROC authors like Catherine Asaro, Jody Lynn Nye, and Judith Tarr, and more.

There's 5 full-length novel or story collection items at the $5 minimum, 5 more at the $15 top-tier (unlike Humble Bundle, there's no obvious way to top up your purchase, so please be sure of what tier you want before buying).

There's also a freebie mp3 song if you subscribe to the newsletter.

This is an auto-buy for me, as it contains works by some of my very favourite authors (be warned that the Nancy Kress book is the 1st in a duology originally published by Tor).

Also, for fans of the Warhammer RPG franchise, there's the Humble Games Workshop Mobile Bundle with the Android game adaptations of the series, and StoryBundle's The Literary Fantasy Bundle is expiring in the next few days.

I really enjoyed both of these when I read them a couple years ago. Very foul-mouthed noirish Urban Fantasy.

A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook
by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel & Sariann Lehrer, Intro by George R. R. Martin

$1.99

Amazon US | Kobo | Google | B&N | OmniLit | eBooks.com
Quote:
Ever wonder what it’s like to attend a feast at Winterfell? Wish you could split a lemon cake with Sansa Stark, scarf down a pork pie with the Night’s Watch, or indulge in honeyfingers with Daenerys Targaryen? George R. R. Martin’s bestselling saga A Song of Ice and Fire and the runaway hit HBO series Game of Thrones are renowned for bringing Westeros’s sights and sounds to vivid life. But one important ingredient has always been missing: the mouthwatering dishes that form the backdrop of this extraordinary world. Now, fresh out of the series that redefined fantasy, comes the cookbook that may just redefine dinner . . . and lunch, and breakfast.

A passion project from superfans and amateur chefs Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Sariann Lehrer—and endorsed by George R. R. Martin himself—A Feast of Ice and Fire lovingly replicates a stunning range of cuisines from across the Seven Kingdoms and beyond. From the sumptuous delicacies enjoyed in the halls of power at King’s Landing, to the warm and smoky comfort foods of the frozen North, to the rich, exotic fare of the mysterious lands east of Westeros, there’s a flavor for every palate, and a treat for every chef.

These easy-to-follow recipes have been refined for modern cooking techniques, but adventurous eaters can also attempt the authentic medieval meals that inspired them. The authors have also suggested substitutions for some of the more fantastical ingredients, so you won’t have to stock your kitchen with camel, live doves, or dragon eggs to create meals fit for a king (or a khaleesi). In all, A Feast of Ice and Fire contains more than 100 recipes, divided by region:

• The Wall: Rack of Lamb and Herbs; Pork Pie; Mutton in Onion-Ale Broth; Mulled Wine; Pease Porridge
• The North: Beef and Bacon Pie; Honeyed Chicken; Aurochs with Roasted Leeks; Baked Apples
• The South: Cream Swans; Trout Wrapped in Bacon; Stewed Rabbit; Sister’s Stew; Blueberry Tarts
• King’s Landing: Lemon Cakes; Quails Drowned in Butter; Almond Crusted Trout; Bowls of Brown; Iced Milk with Honey
• Dorne: Stuffed Grape Leaves; Duck with Lemons; Chickpea Paste
• Across the Narrow Sea: Biscuits and Bacon; Tyroshi Honeyfingers; Wintercakes; Honey-Spiced Locusts

There’s even a guide to dining and entertaining in the style of the Seven Kingdoms. Exhaustively researched and reverently detailed, accompanied by passages from all five books in the series and full-color photographs guaranteed to whet your appetite, this is the companion to the blockbuster phenomenon that millions of stomachs have been growling for. And remember, winter is coming—so don’t be afraid to put on a few pounds.

Includes a Foreword by George R. R. Martin
