Foundation: A Valdemar Novel by Mercedes Lackey £0.99

Titan Books (UK) reprint (prequel "newly founded Collegium ")

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Foundation-V...dp/B00MLDUEGY/

Magpie has slaved in the gem mines of Valdemar for as long as he can remember. Overworked and underfed, he has nowhere else to go, until a stranger and two huge white horses force their way into the quarry, looking for him. An eternal outcast, Mags is stunned when he is chosen to be trained as a herald at the newly founded Collegium in Valdemar’s capital city, Haven. Loyal, noble and just, heralds are called upon to deliver messages, gather information and dispense justice on behalf of the King. Thrust into the centre of a legend in the making, Mags discovers talents he never knew he had and friendships he never thought possible. but when discord spreads through the capital, he learns that life in the court can be just as treacherous as the mines he left behind.

Mercedes Lackey, author of the Heralds of Valdemar fantasy series has published over 100 novels in 25 years.

Thank you for all the links to the Jonathan Carroll book.

Hopefully, someone will give him a try and fall in love with his wonderful, understated fantasies.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman is £0.99, part of the summer sale at Amazon GB.

Quote:
Book Description:
WINNER OF THE SPECSAVERS NATIONAL BOOK AWARDS 2013 BOOK OF THE YEAR
Dive into a magical novel of memory and the adventure of childhood, from one of the brightest, most brilliant writers of our generation.
It began for our narrator forty years ago when the family lodger stole their car and committed suicide in it, stirring up ancient powers best left undisturbed. Dark creatures from beyond the world are on the loose, and it will take everything our narrator has just to stay alive: there is primal horror here, and menace unleashed - within his family and from the forces that have gathered to destroy it.
His only defense is three women, on a farm at the end of the lane. The youngest of them claims that her duckpond is an ocean. The oldest can remember the Big Bang.
THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE is a fable that reshapes modern fantasy: moving, terrifying and elegiac - as pure as a dream, as delicate as a butterfly's wing, as dangerous as a knife in the dark.
Other titles included in the sale (direct link to the sale):
The Way of Kings (The Stormligt Archive Book 1) by Brandon Sanderson, £2.99
Prince of Fools (Red Queen's War Book 1) by Mark Lawrence, £2.99
Blood of Elves (The Witcher Book 1) by Andrzej Sapkowski, £1.99

Thank you for the link.....

....but am I the only one who wants to sit comfortably on a seat, chair, sofa, bed, etc., rather than on the edge of something while reading?!?! Perhaps I'm the only one who is 'posteriorsly' challenged!

And as for "pulse pounding," there's enough construction going on here to give me a headache!

I guess I'm not one for discovering "dangerous secrets," either: I want my life to be simple, such as picking lint from out of my shirt pocket. That's enough excitement for my day, let me tell you!

So, I'll have to pass on this one.

Well obviously you're not a young adult anymore, they just can't sit still, so being on the edge of their seat and ready to jump up and run amok at moment's notice is a feature.

I'm really surprised you didn't throw in something about us getting off your lawn.

I've bought this and the two other books in the series and enjoyed them.

On the planet Nuala, the scam that beguiling free-trader Silver has come to join has just been blown to the skies, along with the throne lines of three separate sovereign nations.

The last male heir of one throne line, Sheel Atare, is unprepared to rule, but he's quick to seize allies wherever he can -- like the beautiful and dangerous Silver.

Now Silver has to choose: stick to the scam, or get sucked into the struggle to save Nuala -- and Sheel Atare's life.

Cryptic: The Best Short Fiction of Jack McDevitt is $1.99 for the next week at Amazon, B&N and Kobo.

Quote:
Jack McDevitt loves a good mystery. And he enjoys baffling his readers with enigmas like why, after so many years of listening with no results, would a SETI director hear an artificial signal and keep it quiet? Why might an astronomer at a space station, facing imminent death from a solar radiation blast, send off a frantic message that he had discovered a Clyde Tombaugh Special? Tombaugh, of course, was the discoverer of Pluto.

What really happened to Christopher Sim, the George Washington of the war against the Ashiyyur? Why had a beloved artist at the top of his profession, with everything to live for, killed himself? Why had a brilliant young biologist discovered how life got started on Earth, but neglected to tell anyone?

And there are of course other anomalies to be encountered in McDevitt's work: A computer threatens the literary world, while a time traveler worries the churches. One artificial intelligence runs for president, and another claims to be a Catholic and demands access to the sacraments. Two friends discover that whenever they get together, shuttles crash, wars break out, or tidal waves hammer a coastline.

A researcher watches endless fighting on another world and finally rebels against the Academy's hands-off doctrine. Meantime, a crewman stranded light-years from Earth, entertains himself by intercepting radio broadcasts from home, originally transmitted during World War II.

Among other questions these tales will answer: What might happen when people in a research lab literally try to play God. Why you don't ever, ever, want to turn out the lights at Bolton's Tower in the Dakotas. Why someone might want to blow up a star. And why it would be a really good idea if Hatch kept his hands off the mallet. These, and twenty-three other cosmic rides, await the reader.

I just got this book and at quite a bargain! For some reason, I had an 86 cent credit at Kobo (for the life of me, I don't recall why) so when I bought this book, they applied the credit to the book. So the thing cost me just 13 cents!

It just goes to show that we shouldn't think less of miniscule credit amounts. They CAN be used for something!

As far as the book goes, I'm only a few chapters in, but I'm already pretty engaged in it.
