Frankly, a pure ereader spends a lot of time just sitting there doing nothing while you read the screen. That would leave enough time to finish resource-intensive tasks, wouldn't it?

I'd think that Kobo would have put a dual-core CPU in the Aura H2O if it were worthwhile. They could have marketed it as being twice as powerful as any other ereader on the market.

Amazon could have done the same with the Kindle Voyage.
A year ago Amazon could only have done so at the price of significantly greater power consumption. My understanding is that the new CPU is more powerful while at the same time using less power than its predecessor. We'll have to wait and see which is the first reader to use it; it would make sense to do so.

I don't believe for an instant that Goodereader has any inside information about this or anything else, needless to say.

I didn't know about their pirate past.

Honestly, I just don't like them because they seem clueless half the time. When they've reviewed something I'm familiar with (the Nook I own or a couple of Android comic reader apps) they make basic mistakes and don't tend to cover stuff in depth. When they review something I'm not familiar with, I just assume it's done with the same lack of care they used on other videos.

I was thinking there might not be a new voyage at all this year, but (true or not) this points to a possible new wrinkle amazon may add to entice people to upgrade.

I've always thought the slow refresh of the e-ink screen is due to the screen technology. Otoh, I do remember some European company showing a prototype that played passable video. Apparently you CAN overcome the slow refresh with a fast CPU.

Personally, having a faster e-reader does not do much for me. I even have my PW set to full refresh on every turn. It already passes the responsiveness threshold in that when I tap the screen to change page, something happens without noticeable delay. Page turn animation? My tablet does it flawlessly and I turn it off.

I guess they could improve the seek function so when you use the scrubber, the entire screen changes and not just the popup window. These are nice refinements but not must have

What WOULD be interesting to me is if they can make it fast enough that it can run general apps. There are lots of text heavy material I'd like to read on a nice e-ink screen -- rss feeds, blogs, Pocket, email, forums etc. E-ink tablet would be a new category of device (calm down, folks, you can still keep your e-reader). It won't happen though, because I think Amazon wants to keep a clear delineation between their kindle and Fire product line.

One of the reason an eInk Kindle has such a good battery life is because the relatively power-hungry CPU goes into a very low-power sleep mode between page turns. Making it run general apps would necessitate having an always-awake CPU, with a consequent significant decrease in battery life. That's why the eInk general-purpose Android tablets have a battery life measured in days, rather than weeks as the eInk readers do.

If the article by good reads is correct about the new voyage I may just have to make a leap to it for my birthday present this November.

The kobo ereaders already have pocket integration and it works very well.

It feels too soon for a new Voyage. Nothing mentioned (guessed at) seems like a major enough leap to justify a new premium e-reader in the way the Voyage was a noticeable leap over the then current Paperwhite. I wonder if, after the Fire Phone, Amazon will think long and hard about releasing new tech?

Of course, Amazon could come out with a new Voyage that is completely different than what was guessed at in that post and will blow everyone away.

Amazon generally refresh product lines once a year, so a "Voyage 2" near the end of the year is a reasonable expectation.

Amazon just refreshed the Kindle line this year by replacing the two-year-old Paperwhite.

Yeah, seems like it would make sense to stagger Voyage and Paperwhite releases. Every two years they could release a new Voyage and then a year later, release a stripped down version and call it the new Paperwhite. But what do I know?

True, but I see the Voyage as a separate range to the PW. The Voyage will be a year old this autumn and I would expect to see a new model. Time will tell.

Amazon did not update the Paperwhite last year, so even by your definition of having two lines Amazon doesn't update them every year.
