I don't know if this is relevent but last night I downloaded 2 new books to my Voyage that had the typesetting enabled (neither had hyphenation) and both books had a slightly different layout. They had smaller line spacing (on all three settings) and the huge gaps between words were gone. Must be part of the new typesetting but it isn't supposed to work on the available firmware yet, correct?

Another thought I had is that only AZK (and perhaps MOBI) requires rejiggering for the enhanced typesetting to work, and for AZW3s, the enhanced typesetting is controlled entirely on the device-side. That would explain why Amazon has been rejiggering their Kindlebooks without it seeming to make any difference in the AZW3s we've seen. | ||

@blaenk and anyone else who has a PW3: Does the Bookerly font work with ebooks (AZW3 or MOBI) that you created with Calibre? I.e., even if you don't get improved word-spacing and hyphenation, can you still use Bookerly? Merci, Gracias, Spasibo! |

It certainly seems to work, from looking at books I've converted from epub in Calibre and then sideloaded.

Yes, the Bookerly font works with every book I tested, including calibre-converted ones. Edit: Ok, @Montana Harper was faster |

Provided that a book doesn't have a hard-coded font, you can read any book using any font, Bookerly included.

Everything but hyphenation works with the sideloaded.

I just updated Kindle for PC to the latest version.. .and books that were last week downloading as Mobi format are now downloading in KF8 Format. The drop caps on computer screen looked perfect, so I suspect this is part of the books being updated to new typsetting standard. The dropcaps specified line height of 1 as part of their formatting (which doesn't work on Kindles, at least, with traditional firmware, since the line height would never go below 1.2), and the body css includes -epub-hyphens: auto This might just be clutter from poor epub being fed to amazon, (both books I sampled were from the same publisher/series) but I'm starting to suspect that the new typesetting engine is just better support for epub css (obeying smaller line heights and hyphen rules, for example) and not any kind of special flag in the book. |
